- According to Jodie Foster, Danvers' rejection of spirituality comes from a place of trauma.
If there is one HBO show that has never disappointed its fans, it has to be True Detective. The new season, NIght Country, which premiered on January 14, has already garnered many positive reviews around the web, standing with a strong 93% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While critics praise the production quality, direction, and overall eerie feel of the story so far, viewers have had a harder time getting on board. This is due to the main character's personality, which is hard to overlook when you're forced to spend so much time with her on screen.
As Jodie Foster herself admitted, Chief Liz Danvers isn't the most pleasant person to be around. But with the help of Navarro and under the influence of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the research station, she'll have to reevaluate her views.
Why True Detective’s Danvers Hates Navarro
Foster tried her best to explain the stance that her character takes from the beginning of the show in an interview with TheWrap:
“Danvers is very busy disrespecting Navarro’s connection to the spiritual world and her instincts and everything that has to do with gut and feeling. She is ashamed of that in herself and has done a lot to wall herself off from it, so when she sees it in Navarro, she just can’t help but make fun of her,” the actress said.
As annoying as this may be to viewers, especially those who actually share Navarro's spirituality, Danvers' reaction is very common among people with past trauma. After suffering a loss, some people turn to spirituality as a way of coping, while others simply reject it, lest they lose touch with reality.
Maintaining a clear mind can be especially important when coping with loss involves active inquiry.
After all, the conflict between logic and intuition is a great premise for two characters involved in the investigation. If anything, putting aside their differences and finding a way to work together can make this duo completely unstoppable. Fingers crossed, viewers will see that day come pretty soon,
