Will he serve justice to the character in the upcoming Netflix reboot?

In a move that Wednesday Addams herself would most likely appreciate as audacious, Tim Burton, who is currently in charge of a Netflix character reboot, said that the past variations of Wednesday were not as good as they could have been.

Speaking in a Netflix making-of documentary Inside the Character, Burton reflected on how the previous adaptation treated the iconic Addams family member.

"Wednesday is like the classic outsider, obviously," the director said. "You know, she sees things very black and white... mainly black. But in the past incarnations, it's been very cartoony."

According to Burton, the upcoming Netflix show aims to "give it a reality". The director was quick to celebrate that the show has Jenna Ortega as the titular character on board, "because [he] can't imagine any other Wednesday".

Notably, Ortega herself praised the past variations of Wednesday as "flawless".

"It was really important to me that I did something different, even though she's been done so flawlessly in the past," the actress noted, going on to reveal what exactly she is going to change in Wednesday: "She's a bit more socially awkward. There's a confidence there, but it's more concealed."

The new Netflix show will follow Wednesday Addams in Nevermore Academy as she struggles to navigate herself into adulthood and develop her writing skills — all that against the backdrop of a creepy private school with hidden libraries, secret societies, and a homicidal monster. Other Addams family members are also expected to make an appearance. In the trailer released in early October, we have already got a glimpse at Gomez and Morticia Addams, as well as Uncle Fester who is portrayed by Fred Armisen.

In what appears to be a thrilling mix of a dark-ish teen comedy and a coming-of-age villain origin story with some elements of horror and criminal drama, Netflix aspires to bring the iconic Addams daughter back to our screens starting November 23.
