Tilda Swinton’s Constantine 2 Update Breaks Everyone’s Hearts
The actress will most probably not appear in the DC Comics sequel.
Summary:
- Tilda Swinton says she won’t reprise her character, the archangel Gabriel, in Constantine 2, a sequel of the 2005 classic horror movie.
- There is a theory which implies that Keanu Reeves will portray Gabriel, as his titular character is sent to Earth and starts mocking his former foe.
While Constantine 2 has already been in development since 2022, it’s not really clear which actors from the original 2005 hit movie will participate in the sequel, apart from its leading star, Keanu Reeves, who played the titular anti-hero exorcist John Constantine, traveling between Earth and Hell, having accepted the main role once again.
Tilda Swinton, who portrayed his protagonist, the archangel and the half-breed angel Gabriel, hadn’t spoken about her return to DC Comics’ horror revival until recently.
However, the actress lately confessed in an Inverse interview she knows nothing about the sequel as its creators hadn’t contacted her and the probability of its happening later is devastatingly low.
“I don’t think Gabriel will be flapping his/her wings,” she said.
As we recall the ending of Constantine, Gabriel became mortal and John Constantine was restored to life by Lucifer Morningstar (played by Peter Stormare), who removed his terminal cancer, and was sent back to Earth, just as he was ascending to Heaven.
In this connection, there has been a rumor that in the much-awaited sequel Keanu Reeves will appear not as John Constantine, but as a different character, more presumably, Gabriel, who is originally depicted as an angel capable of transforming into both men and women as a human. Thus, such a scenario can imply that Reeves’ titular character would mock his previous rival, using his form in the world of the living.
“I did hear a rumor, I don’t know if you heard it, that Keanu was going to play Gabriel. Which would be beautiful,” Swinton addressed the speculation about Constantine 2.
As for the other details concerning the sequel, the original movie’s director, Francis Lawrence, confirmed his return to the Constantine’s comics universe.
Besides, there are many speculations about other actors, who are unlikely to reprise their roles in the sequels, as well as Tilda Swinton. These include Shia LaBeouf as Chase Kramer and Rachel Weisz as Angela Dodson, while Peter Stormare will apparently return as Lucifer.
The highly anticipated sequel of Constantine will land DC Studios' Elseworlds branding, which consists of the projects that are different from the main DCU line. Ahead of its release, you can watch the original classic movie on Prime Video.
