This is for lovers of psychedelic mystery and bloody mayhem wrapped in body horror.

Summary:

  • Released in 2021, Brand New Cherry Flavor will definitely appeal to fans of The OA with its surreality and bold experimentation with mixing genres.
  • The show follows Lisa as she uses occult practices to get revenge on a producer who gave her movie to another director and ruined her career.
  • While still a show about achieving success in Los Angeles, Brand New Cherry Flavor resorts to a mystical aspect in the form of occult practices, voodoo magic and mythology.

There were not many truly original projects in 2021, but rare hits like Arcane or Squid Games overshadowed some no less exciting shows. The most notable of these is Brand New Cherry Flavor.

The plot is based on the scandalous novel of the same name by Todd Grimson. The author suffers from multiple sclerosis – the disease provokes strange dreams, which Grimson transferred to the book. Thanks to such phantasmagoric and surreal scenes, both the novel and the show have acquired a specific atmosphere that will certainly appeal to those still mourning the cancellation of The OA.

What Is Brand New Cherry Flavor About?

The plot takes place in Hollywood in the 90s – Lisa Nova, an aspiring director, arrives in Los Angeles after shooting a horror short film that impressed viewers with its extreme violence. Lisa dreams of turning her experimental work into a feature-length film, and Lou Burke, once an Oscar-winning director and now a producer on the downslope of his career, is there to help.

At first, Burke promises the girl a great future, but Lisa soon realizes that the producer's main goal is not the movie, but her. When she rejects the producer's advances, he blocks all of Nova's career paths, and hires another director to make the film.

Unable to find a way to deal with the producer, Lisa decides to take an unusual and radical step – for the sake of revenge, she turns to the witch Boro and occult practices that will affect both the fate of Burke and Lisa.

The Show Is an Experimental Mix of Genres

On a conceptual level, Brand New Cherry Flavor may be one of the most unusual and wild Netflix series of recent years. It has the visual aesthetic and violence of Nicolas Winding Refn, the quirky humor of David Lynch, and the body horror of David Cronenberg.

Director Nick Antosca has created a unique multi-genre work: revenge movie, body horror, social satire, noir thriller and surreal experiment all rolled into one. The writers weave together occult practices, voodoo magic, necromancy, and the mythology of the Native Americans. At the same time, the show remains a story about the pursuit of success on the outskirts of Los Angeles.
