Another Colin Firth masterpiece you shouldn't miss out.

Summary:

  • The Railway Man is a WWII movie with Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman as leading stars.
  • At the center of the story there’s a real-life story about war veteran Eric Lomax.
  • The movie was highly praised for its accurate portrayal of the historic events.

The war movie genre is extremely popular with audiences – maybe because they can be very educational and teach the viewer about the horrors of any war at any given time.

Of course, there are some battles that have left a much more significant mark than others, and among them is obviously World War II. There are many TV shows and movies about this subject, some of which are very popular and some of which are not.

The Railway Man is a 2013 movie that focuses on the life of a WWII veteran Eric Lomax, who was a British Army officer, sent to a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in 1942. The role of Lomax is played by Colin Firth, and the part of his wife, Patricia, was played by Nicole Kidman.

This particular movie is not about the battles and the combat itself, but about the aftermath of the actions that took place in Lomax's life. The movie is set in the 70s, and explores the war hero after he is rescued from the camp and becomes a respected man in society.

One day he finds out that the man responsible for all the torture in his life is still alive, and being haunted by the traumatic past, he decides to take revenge on him.

But even though the movie makes it clear (in a not-so-obvious way) that Lomax suffers a lot from the past, he still makes the choice not to create more violence hurting Nagase. The film emphasizes the importance of forgiving one's enemy in order to let go of horrible memories and traumas.

The Railway Man offers a more accurate depiction of working in labor camps than other war films, as it analyzes both the psychological and physical effects that imprisonment had on the men that were captured.

It is obvious that all the war horrors don’t fade away after the battles end or after the soldiers are rescued from the camps. All the viewers claim that they couldn’t hold back tears while watching the movie.

However, it wasn’t that popular in the theaters and only grossed near $25 million, with a $18 million budget. If you feel like the movie deserves more justice and clout, The Railway Man is available to stream on Netflix.
