This Massive Grey's Anatomy Catastrophe Was Actually Pretty Lame

One thing Grey's Anatomy has always been good at is tear-jerking moments. Whether it's the heartbreaking story of a patient or the interpersonal drama between two beloved characters, Shonda Rhimes knows all the buttons to the viewers' fragile hearts, and she's not afraid to push them in order to make great television.

Some of the most emotional scenes in the show come from the episodes at the end of season 8 and the beginning of season 9, where all of the characters deal with the plane crash and its horrific aftermath. Many Grey's fans cite these episodes as some of the most tragic on TV. However, the more we watch them, the more there is to criticize.

Grey’s Anatomy Mark and Lexie’s Deaths

Of course, one of the biggest things Grey's took away from its fans with these episodes was the romance between Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey, which many viewers had been rooting for since they first met. While there is a certain beauty in them both dying as a result of the same event, their deaths were handled very differently.

While Mark got the sendoff he deserved in a separate episode, Lexie's death was almost glossed over. Of course, viewers got to see the effect it had on Mark and her sister Meredith, but they never got to see the reactions of her ex-boyfriend Jackson or her own father. Sadly, her character didn't get the justice she deserved.

However, the deaths aren't the only thing that bothered many viewers about the storyline. While it was interesting to see how all the characters would react in a truly horrific and shocking scenario, it almost felt like the production cut out the most interesting part and only showed the aftermath.

What happened right before and during the crash, as well as how the people in the hospital reacted to it, will forever remain behind the camera, even though it could have been some of the most touching and emotional performances from the cast.

Speaking of performances, while many praise Ellen Pompeo's portrayal of Meredith in this episode, some scenes feel a bit forced.

Unfortunately, the storylines that were unlocked by the crash weren't much more exciting either. Everything from the drama between Callie and Arizona to the whole fight with the hospital owners was hard to watch and not worth the pain the episode caused the audience.
