This General Hospital Villain Doesn’t Need Any Redemption Arc
Just let her show her full evil power.
Summary:
- General Hospital is an ABC soap opera that has been on the air for more than 60 years.
- Throughout its run, the soap has produced many fan-favorite supervillains.
- In the modern day, one of the most prominent antagonists of the show is Esme Prince, portrayed by Avery Pohl.
It's hard to underestimate the importance of a good villain or villainess in any story. They often captivate the audience with their charisma and their ruthless, yet very clever, cruel plans. They are usually smart, attractive, and full of ideas about how to turn the seemingly peaceful lives of others upside down. What's not to love?
This is especially true of soap operas. Though the crimes of soap opera villains may vary in violence depending on the premise, they are always there to ruin the lives of others. From swapping children in hospitals to committing actual murders and holding people captive, their imagination usually knows no bounds.
For this reason, many people feel that not all of them should end up with redemption arcs. In fact, it might be better if they don't turn out to be good at all, leaving viewers in more suspense.
This is the case with General Hospital fans regarding Esme Prince. Many fear that if she turns good, she will inevitably become bland and boring.
Esme Prince Amnesia Storyline
It wasn't really surprising for fans to learn that Esme will become another victim of the endless amnesia storylines since memory loss seems to be the only tool the General Hospital writers are using these days to move the story forward. What they don't like to see, however, is Esme becoming a protagonist.
While it's always nice to see different sides of seemingly simple characters, and Avery Pohl's performance definitely allows her to switch between two personalities, there's nothing really interesting about someone being good on soaps.
There has to be something to keep the character interesting, and some fans have their own ideas on how to make Esme the great villain she used to be. All the General Hospital writers have to do is give her her memories back and let her manipulate everyone the way she wants to, at least for a while.
This would not only be the way to finally shake up the good old amnesia trope, but it would also save the character from being dragged through the mud of a painfully slow and uninteresting get-back-together storyline with Spencer. Or at least make it a little spicier.
Whether you agree with the General Hospital writers' decision to show us the new, good side of Esme, or whether you think she needs to continue the villainy she's so good at, you won't want to miss the next few episodes to see how the story unfolds. Tune in to General Hospital Monday through Friday on ABC.
