This Deleted Iron Man Scene Reveals Sinister Secrets Marvel Wanted to Hide
Iron Man started the golden era of Marvel and became iconic the day it came out — but apparently, the movie had a dark secret Kevin Feige decided to put under wraps.
No movie with a budget larger than two beer cans and a dream has ever come out in its entirety.
There are always at least a few cut scenes, and there's a plethora of reasons for that, from total screen time limitation and pacing to storyline coherence and sensitive topics that directors eventually decide not to raise in their movies.
This is why there are so many videos with cut scenes compilations on YouTube and why some movies receive so-called "director cuts" that introduce the more complete versions of the films.
Marvel is no stranger to deleting scenes and even entire sequences from its movies: after all, the Marvel Universe is large and complex, and it takes careful planning on the directors' side to not undermine other movies with some unwanted details.
Sometimes, the studio shares its cut scenes… But sometimes, it tries to hide them.
Apparently, Iron Man — the movie that marked the start of Marvel's golden age — had a deleted scene that contained a secret about Tony Stark's character that Kevin Feige ultimately decided to not share with the world. What was it, though?
The movie's producer Jeremy Latcham recently shared that there were at least a few of these scenes, but one was especially peculiar. It involved… Laundry?
"There was a whole runner in Iron Man where Tony Stark was doing laundry and I don't think they've ever come out. <...>
Tony is doing laundry for the captors, but he's really breaking the washing machine and stealing parts from it to build the Mark 1 suit. It's so absurd. It's wild," revealed Latcham.
According to the producer, Kevin Feige stated that this scene must never see the light of day because it would be "embarrassing," and also hinted that it revealed some darker secret about the time Tony Stark spent in the Ten Rings' captivity.
Unfortunately, Latcham decided against sharing more details about it.
Ever since this revelation, fans have been speculating that it's more than likely that those scenes eventually showed the more sinister side of Tony Stark — perhaps, something he had to do to escape the Ten Rings.
To keep the character's image intact, Feige ordered to delete and hide that footage, and Iron Man remained the good guy in everyone's eyes.
We may never know the truth. But at least we know that somewhere out there, there might just be footage of Robert Downey Jr. doing someone else's laundry.
Nice.
