After the 2017 remake’s horrendous failure, Universal is reportedly working on another The Mummy movie.

If there’s one thing Hollywood’s been obsessed with lately, it’s remakes and reboots. Well-established franchises tend to sell well, so why not rake up some more money from them, right?

Except that neither critics nor the audience buy into that anymore and dare demand actual good movies in order to spend their money on that popcorn.

The Mummy has already gone through getting a terrible reboot that failed, but apparently, it wasn’t enough: a new installment is in the works, and it’s a prequel.

The Mummy Prequel Reportedly in Development

Recently, famous industry insider Daniel Richtman took to his Patreon to deliver an unexpected update on The Mummy franchise. According to Richtman, a prequel movie is currently in development at Universal, with Midway’s Wes Tooke penning the script. This is yet to be confirmed as officially, Tooke is now working on the screenplay for The Thomas Crown Affair.

The insider didn’t specify which of The Mummy versions the prequel is attached to. However, it’s highly unlikely to be a prequel to the 1932 classic, and it would have been preposterous to assume that the absolute failure of a reboot from 2017 would get another chance — so our best bet should be the beloved Brendan Fraser- led The Mummy from 1999.

The Mummy Prequel Better Learn on 2017’s Mistakes

When the 2017 remake with Tom Cruise was being made, its creators didn’t bother even calling the Fraser-led original’s director Stephen Sommers for either his blessing or advice, and the movie… Didn’t turn out so well. In fact, it was absolutely demolished by critics and viewers, not to mention that it insulted the OG director.

If there’s one lesson to be learned from that experience — seeing how the “don’t touch The Mummy lesson has arguably gone over everyone’s heads — then it’s that respecting the source material is essential. Who would’ve guessed, right? It often comes like an actual revelation to moviemakers that fans don’t take lightly to those who disrespect their favorite franchises, for some reason.

Both Wes Tooke and whoever will direct the upcoming The Mummy prequel should learn from the previous attempt’s mistakes and come to Sommers, first. Especially if they are, indeed, tackling a prequel for Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy.

If they’re making a prequel to the 2017 remake, they shouldn’t even bother, though.
