Back in the day when most of the most popular horror TV shows would sometimes go to extreme lengths to scare the hell out of their viewers.

With its disturbing imagery and boundary-pushing content, American Horror Story has been terrifying audiences since 2011. From mass murder to abuse and assault, the show has crossed the line on a number of occasions.

Whether designed to shock or to go over the top, these moments have left viewers both disturbed and captivated.

Here are some of the most disturbing scenes from American Horror Story that have gone too far.

The Rubber Man Rapes Vivien (Murder House)

Having sex with your girlfriend's mother is another level of perversion, but raping your girlfriend's mother... In a disturbing twist, Vivien has a sexual encounter with someone wearing a rubber suit, believing it to be her husband.

However, it later turns out to be Tate, who has decided out of the blue to terrorize Violet's mother and impregnate her.

Why the hell do we still worship this character?

Lana’s Coat-Hanger Abortion (Asylum)

Our stomachs are in knots every time we recall this scene. In a shocking and disturbing scene, Sarah Paulson's Lana Winters tries to get rid of a serial killer's baby by performing a self-abortion with a coat hanger.

We later learn that the attempt was unsuccessful, but the graphic nature of the scene and Paulson's convincing performance haunt us to this day.

The Frat House (Coven)

The horror and disgust come right in the first episode of the third season of AHS. At a frat party, Emma Robert's character, Madison, is drugged and subjected to graphic and explicit gang rape.

It became one of the show's most traumatizing and realistic portrayals of a common nightmare.

Elsa Mars’ Past (Freak Show)

In Freak Show, Elsa's character reveals a shocking history as a German dominatrix in Weimar in 1932. She became famous for the humiliation and torture she inflicted on others, including a German soldier who was forced to act like a schnauzer.

Eventually, she herself became the subject of a snuff film in which her legs were amputated with a chainsaw by sadistic Nazis.

A Colonial Impaling (Roanoke)

Season 6 features one of the most horrific murder scenes in television history. Three teenagers decide to check out the hoax and find themselves trapped by the Blood Moon curse. They end up being captured by colonists, impaled on stakes, and burned alive.

With the perspective of their GoPro cameras showing this scene, it becomes even more real, intense, and vomit-inducing.
