Some cinematic masterpieces are truly timeless, perfectly enjoyable even decades after their release because their ideas never get old, while others can age horribly as time passes and some aspects of them become incredibly dated.

In rare cases, however, a movie's themes and ideas can become even more relevant many years after its release, as what was perceived as fiction suddenly becomes reality.

1. Her (2013)

Joaquin Phoenix portrays a lonely introvert, Theodore Twombly, who buys a complex AI operating system, Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, and becomes romantically involved with her.

Ten years ago, this idea seemed like a rather bizarre concept, but now so-called "AI girlfriends" (programs that use AI algorithms to simulate romantic partners) are becoming more popular every year, and the technology is only getting more sophisticated.

2. Strange Days (1995)

Written and produced by James Cameron and starring Ralph Fiennes, this underrated cyberpunk thriller set in a world where people can record and sell their experiences has become a dark reality, albeit to a lesser extent than in the movie.

With the proliferation of the internet and social media, people can now easily share parts of their lives with others, and just like in the movie, there is a demand for material that depicts real murders and sexual assaults.

3. Demolition Man (1993)

This sci-fi action movie starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes is about a cryogenically frozen LAPD sergeant, John Spartan, who wakes up in the year 2032 to fight his old nemesis.

Curiously, the politically correct society of the future, which was clearly satirical at the time, is quite similar to our modern world, with anti-smoking and junk food campaigns, "franchise wars" and censorship of bad language being just a few examples.

4. The Social Network (2010)

Upon its release, David Fincher's biographical drama caused considerable controversy for its rather negative portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg.

However, in a twist of irony, the public's perception of Zuckerberg has deteriorated significantly over the years due to some of his controversial statements and actions, leading people to believe that Fincher may have gotten his character exactly right.

5. Idiocracy (2006)

While modern society is still (hopefully) a long way from looking like the one depicted in this sci-fi comedy set in a future populated by dumb morons, the frightening similarities are already beginning to appear, such as mind-numbing media and politicians acting like clowns.
