When the good start is not enough.

There are so many movies that can be described as "almost good," but end up being huge disappointments for various reasons. And one of the most unfair is when the great movie ends with a finale that is so twisted that it makes no sense at all.

It seems like most of the time the directors just use the "unexpected twist" tool for the sake of using it and didn't even think that it might make things worse.

Here are ten examples of such movies (beware of spoilers).

1. Source Code

Source Code is a sci-fi action thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a U.S. Army captain sent into a digital recreation of a real-life train explosion to find out who is responsible and prevent it from happening again. To do this, he steals the identity of another innocent person, a family man who is a teacher, and thus ends his life on earth.

In this sense, the movie becomes pointless, as the purpose of the mission was to save lives, but instead Gyllenhaal's character ends up screwing up at least one.

2. World War Z

It's not often that Brad Pitt's movies get mixed reviews, but sometimes it happens, like it did with World War Z. The zombie invasion action started off okay, but fans of the original story could see the differences and inaccuracies the movie had compared to the novel it was based on.

The big disappointment was the finale of the flick. The director decided to change it from the original, which was too bleak, and gave his characters hope, which was a mistake because the ending didn't fit at all with the rest of the movie.

3. Serenity

Serenity had everything to be the best thriller. The amazing cast, including Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway as the main stars, and also an amazing supporting cast and a great director, who by the way was the creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight. However, it seems that he got carried away with his thoughts and gave the audience a slightly more complicated story than he should have.

The final twist of the movie was that it wasn't all real, but just a video game scenario. And that's just something in poor taste…

4. I Am Legend

One of Will Smith 's most famous movies, and also one that comes to mind when we try to remember a movie with a bad finale. Viewers even call the ending nonsensical, and frankly, we couldn't agree more. For most of the zombie action movie, Robert Neville, Smith's character, was trying to survive and find other people like him. And right at the end of the movie, when his mission is 99% complete, he chooses... to die.

The funny thing is that there were two finales that the crew could have used instead of that one; there was an alternate ending that didn't fly well with the focus groups, and there was a well-received finale in the book that the movie was based on.

5. The Happening

People get used to good things quickly, so when M. Night Shyamalan gave them perfectly twisted movies like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, they didn't think twice before buying tickets to the premiere of The Happening. And that's something many people, including us, regret to this day.

The movie started out as a typical sci-fi thriller, suggesting that something sinister is responsible for the fact that when the wind blows, people just start killing themselves in a chaotic way. However, the slow-building story led us nowhere. The movie just ended on a "good note" where everything was normal and gave no explanation. Even 15 years later, people are still wondering "what did we even watch?"

6. Now You See Me

An example of a movie that could have been at the top of the list for best comedy or most entertaining plot if not for its finale. Instead, Now You See Me provides a perfect case study for when the unexpected twist at the end is overrated. The movie about magicians robbing banks was great until it was revealed that the mastermind wizard of the whole scheme was actually the cop who spent his life trying to catch the magicians.

7. Planet of the Apes

No one will argue that the original ending of Franklin J. Schaffner's 1968 film was iconic. The moment when Charleton Heston realizes it was Earth all along is truly legendary. And as much as we adore Tim Burton, his 2001 remake didn't live up to fans' expectations. Burton's finale was so lame, with all the time travel shenanigans and the ape memorial, that we feel he kind of disrespected the whole story.

8. Man of Steel

Another movie that everyone talks about when it comes to disappointing movies is Man of Steel. Almost every time the villain is killed in the movie, the fans are happy about it. But that wasn't the case with this movie. The real problem people have with this movie is that Superman, usually a model of integrity, violently kills General Zod at the end of the movie after destroying much of Metropolis.

9. Signs

Another time when M. Night Shyamalan's twisted mind didn't fit the movie he created. And even the star-studded cast couldn't help Signs from ending up on a list like this. The movie is about an alien invasion discovered by a priest. After some time, however, it seems that they can be easily defeated by... water.

Yes, it makes no sense that the intellectually superior aliens would invade a planet covered in the only thing that can destroy them.

10. Indecent Proposal

The movie is strange in many ways. First of all, the plot involves human trafficking, which is already a controversial thing. The story revolves around a husband who trades his wife to a wealthy man for $1 million. However, the twisted plot makes her come back to her husband at the end of the movie and have a happily ever after. And what creeps us out is the fact that they spent the money on a hippo.
