There’s Only One Way to Explain the Biggest Issue With Crippled Marvel Multiverse
Can anyone fix the multiverse?
Multiversal travel is the trend in the superhero genre of recent years. Not only does it offer a lot of great possibilities plot-wise, but it also raises a lot of questions.
The rules of the multiverse in Marvel movies can be really vague and confusing. A recent discussion on Reddit brought up an interesting point: Why do characters seem to change or adapt to fit into different universes, but only sometimes? That is a really good question.
One instance is Doctor Strange. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, when Strange and America Chavez jumped through universes, they changed to fit into the animated universe.
However, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we see different villains being kept by Spider Society. One of them is the live-action version of Prowler, portrayed by Donald Glover? Why didn’t he adapt to the animated style?
The reason might be as simple as the fact that different companies are behind these universes. So, the rules might differ based on who's producing the content.
But as you may know, Donald Glover already portrayed Aaron Davis in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. This and some other clues suggest that the project's of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Spider-Verse movies are all in the same multiverse. If they are, shouldn’t the rules be the same?
Moreover, the same Spider-Verse seems to contradict the rules – for instance, in the post-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse. In that scene, Miguel changes to the style of the 60s Spider-Man when travels to this universe.
If Marvel ever decides to mix these universes, they could argue that the rules depend on the method used to travel between them. Some fans brought up the difference between magic and science.
In the MCU, magic is often needed to traverse the multiverse. So, characters like Tobey Maguire 's Spider-Man and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man might not glitch in No Way Home because they traveled through magical means, whereas Into the Spider-Verse used science.
Anyway, fans are dying to see Sony’s Spider-Verse collide with Disney ’s MCU. This would be a whole new level of epic... unless you're a big fan of common sense, that is.
