The Winchesters' Never-Before-Seen Monster Changes Supernatural Lore
The first episode of the Supernatural spinoff introduced us to a never before seen or heard-of big bad. The fans are now confused and somewhat disappointed since this new monster doesn't really fit into the lore and storyline we know.
The Acreda is an otherworldly creature from a parallel universe or dimension that has powers way beyond alphas or leviathans, with possibly only one way to kill it – a single magic box. We learn that they come from another world, and, as Dean narrates, it came to wipe out humanity, monsters, daemons, and angels. Their ability to travel between dimensions puts them alongside Archangels power-wise, from what we know. The problem is – never in any of the plots, flashbacks, or even alternate timelines of Supernatural we've heard or seen any signs of such a creature, while the prequel makes a point of it being a threat way before Sam and Dean were born. It even gives more weight to the Men of Letters organization since it seems they were keeping Acreda at bay for centuries.
In countless discussions on Reddit, fans are furious and curious at the same time, making suggestions of how this new path will play out. Many mention that it's ironic how Jensen Ackles kept saying how important it is not to rewrite the canon but maintain it, and then this twist leaves us with very limited options for fitting into the Supernatural storyline. It was a rage eight months ago when fans found out that Mary and John hunting together is the show's narrative, and now we have aliens on our hands.
Supernatural already played with aliens, but only to make fun of the idea, where "aliens" turned out to be fairies, conjured into our world by a spell, and were quite easy to deal with. This time, aliens are not only the main villain, but they are a threat to the proper continuation of the story we know and love, and perhaps the only way for it all to pan out is a memory wipe, which will erase the entire prequel. But before that, we can assume that John and Mary will somehow kill the new monster or at least the ones in our dimension during the prequel.
Such inconsistencies drive die-hard fans insane, but still, we are yet to see how the writers of the show will fit every new detail into the canon.
