Things look quite innocent as of now, but Supernatural has never shied away from heartbreaking surprises.

The Supernatural prequel about Sam and Dean Winchesters' parents, John and Mary, appears to channel a nostalgic and even cozy vibe judging by its two first episodes. However, with this universe, one can never be too cautious.

According to fans, the soft vibe of the show might be deceiving — at least when it comes to the beginning of the show with its warm coloring scheme and generally optimistic tone. What started off as a good old hunting story with fun quips, rock'n'roll music and undercover assignments might escalate into hell on earth pretty quickly. And when it comes to it, Supernatural fans just know it better.

Did You Catch a Dean Reference in The Winchesters' Episode Titles?

In fact, it's not just the feeling that fans get from the show. According to one very thorough Twitter thread, the coloring schemes in both shows, The Winchesters and Supernatural, are kind of hinting at it themselves.

The first season of Supernatural were notably dark and cold when it came to color, mainly because the main characters were in pain and felt lonely due to their childhood traumas. However, the later seasons slowly moved into warmer colors — a certain sign of the characters overcoming the majority of their issues and learning to live with them.

With the Winchesters, things are different. The show starts off with a warm coloring scheme and everything seems relatively fine: John is back from war and he has just found the love of his life. However, according to the color scheme logic, this may not last for a very long time.

"If we consider it like that, it makes sense that the Winchesters starts bright and warm and golden: it's a story in reverse, the characters are not alone, they're a group of scoobies, they're still naive and genuine (see: John) & haven't been traumatized and toughened yet," the author of the theory, Twitter user @destiel_wings, suggests. "If I'm right, as the story progresses, maybe the angels will mess with the "idyllic" lightheartedness of the characters, tainting this story to break them, creating the grittiness from which Sam & Dean can be born to become the heroes the earth needs."

During this "evolution", the fan continues, The Winchesters' color scheme is going to go darker and colder and it will all make sense in connection with the first seasons of Supernatural.

Did Rowena Really Appear in The Winchesters E2?

However, the showrunners, spearheaded by executive producer Jensen Ackles who also reprises his role as Dean Winchester, might have a lot of other surprises in store. The only way to know, as always, is keep up with the story and watch the new episodes that air on The CW every Tuesday.
