The Winchesters Aims at Messing with SPN Fans, Does a Pretty Good Job So Far
Supernatural fans are now the living embodiment of the "I've connected the two dots" meme.
The Winchesters are three episodes into its story, and fans still cannot quite understand what exactly is going on and where is the truth.
Before The CW prequel even hit small screens, Supernatural fandom went furious about the show seemingly retconning the original storyline of John and Mary Winchester. In the prequel, Mary appears to be actively hunting monsters, while Supernatural established that John only turned to hunting after her death at the hands of Azazel.
However, executive producer Jensen Ackles, who also reprises his role as Dean Winchester and narrates the show, has made it clear that the prequel is going to stay true to the canon.
Well, as of now, it's quite hard to understand what is going on. Is The Winchesters actually retconning Supernatural? No one knows: fans are still unsure whether the events take place in some sort of an alternate universe or whether Ackles is trying to imply that the original story of his and Sam's parents was simply not true this entire time.
Episode 3 of The Winchesters only adds to that uncertainty, because John and Mary are now established to... have history with other people aside from each other. John appears to have given an engagement ring to another girl before departing to Vietnam, while Mary (who is struggling to retire from hunting) wants to give regular life a chance and go see a movie with some guy named Kyle.
At this point, OG Supernatural fans don't even know what to believe in, with every new episode of the prequel only messing up things even further. However, it looks like people... are genuinely enjoying this mess.
So far, people seem to love the show and the comeback to the world of Supernatural it provides. Besides, the inconsistencies and quirks feel like they were deliberately put there, and some kind of a big reveal awaits fans pretty soon.
Only time will tell if that is true. The Winchesters airs on The CW on Tuesdays.
