Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak reunite to venture into the vastness of the Wild West.

Summary

  • On February 2, a new movie, Calamity Jane, was released on Tubi as a reunion for the stars of the Arrow series.
  • The movie tells the story of a famous frontierswoman who sets out on a path of revenge after the murder of her lover, Wild Bill Hickok.
  • Although Arrowverse fans are excited about the surprise reunion, the film has been met with some skepticism.

Well, it looks like Flash is messing with timelines again. Stephen Amell's Green Arrow has decided to trade in his bow, arrow, and domino mask for a revolver, spurs, and cowboy hat. And change his name from Oliver Queen to Wild Bill Hickok.

Okay, we were just kidding, but Stephen Amell seriously decided to try out the role of the hero of the American Old West, familiar to all fans of history and the series Deadwood.

Yes, dear Arrow fans, rejoice (or be horrified by the costume design): although Heels was undeservedly canceled, Stephen Amell's acting career has not stood still. In fact, the new movie he stars in is not about him at all, but about Felicity Smoak's Emily Bett Rickards, who also appeared on screen as another legendary heroine celebrated in Westerns, Calamity Jane.

A most unusual reunion, made even stranger by the horribly ill-fitting wigs, but we'll give it a chance out of nostalgia for the Arrowverse, won't we?

Tubi's New Movie

Today, February 2, Tubi released a new movie with a title that will explain everything to fans of the Western genre, 20th century Hollywood cinema and, as we mentioned, Deadwood (yes, we'll be referring to it a lot, so be prepared) — Calamity Jane.

Calamity Jane, born Martha Jane Canary, was an adventurer in the late 1800s who tramped more than a few miles across the Great Plains, knew more than a few famous sharpshooters, and told more than a few tall tales, making her semi-legendary during her lifetime. Pop culture also knows her as an acquaintance of another folk hero, the aforementioned Wild Bill Hickok, who according to some accounts was her lover and even her husband, but according to others couldn't stand her whatsoever.

Both characters were made famous by the 1953 movie musical Calamity Jane. Not only was the movie built around the relationship with Hickok trope, but it even influenced the perception of Jane as possibly bisexual or lesbian due to her preference for masculine (for the time) clothing and interest in other women, around which much of her image in the Deadwood series is built.

The new movie, however, is based on more historical events, the murder of Hickok during a poker game by gambler Jack McCall. But it seems that the writers have decided to give Stephen Amell's character a little more justice, because according to the plot, he is not killed by a drunken poker player, but by a whole gang of outlaws.

This is the situation Calamity Jane finds herself in, armed with two revolvers and a witty quip, as she sets out on a quest for revenge with Sheriff Mason (Tim Rozon).

A New Hit or One Only Arrow Fans Want to See?

If we ignore the completely out-of-place wigs that look like they were meant for a high school drama club play, the production quality leaves a lot to be desired, as many people noted after seeing the trailer (some even compared it to a typical SNL sketch). So it seems that the movie was unintentionally only aimed at Arrowverse fans who want to catch a sweet reunion of their favorite actors: some people noted that Calamity Jane looks more like an episode of Legends of Tomorrow in terms of quality, so let's assume that it's just an extravagant stand-alone episode with cameos of Arrow's favorite characters.

But maybe we shouldn't be so hard on this new release from Tubi Films. For one thing, fans of Westerns should definitely check it out, as the plot promises a fresh take on the famous folk heroes of the Wild West, most notably, as the title suggests, Calamity Jane.
