The Walking Dead Delivered a Game-Changing Twist Ahead of the Series Finale
Spoiler alert for those who haven't yet watched TWD's Season 11 Episode 22.
Those who've been unhappy with how storyline developed in the final episodes of the series may have finally received the long-awaited present. The twist the writers have prepared for us is quite ground breaking. It is Mercer changing his colors – not all of a sudden though – and taking the right side.
In the comic book Michael Mercer is portrayed as a good man who was forced to do bad things in the name of Commonwealth safety. No wonder because Pamela is clearly an outright villain and Mercer has long stopped sharing her values.
Mercer intercepts Eugene on his way to jail after a so-called mock of a trial and pronounces his iconic "Time to f**k sh*t up." While in the comic book his decision is a pragmatic one, the TV series once again diverged from the source material – Eugene never stood any trial in the book. But the writers made the trial one of the biggest emotional blows for Mercer, which in the long run leads to his rebellion against Pamela's rule.
Interestingly, The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang told EW that the phrase "Time to f**k sh*t up" was not originally in the script.
"That was just a free take that Michael [James Shaw] did for fun and nobody thought we'd use it. But my editor had put it in the cut that he and the director [Rose Troche] did. And I was like, "We should just check the scripted takes, just in case." And, by far, that was the coolest, best take. And we're like, "Let's just use it. Why not?" she revealed, adding that Mercer's original last line was much more dry – "time to take this place!"
The latest episode of the series has surely gave the franchise the momentum it needed so badly. By Season 11 Episode 20 the fans have become quite upset with the show. They were unhappy with the storyline that moved too slowly, while also being disappointed with too much talking and little action on screen.
The Walking Dead Season 11 will be the final one in the American post-apocalyptic horror franchise, which premiered all the way back in October 2010. The show has introduced the viewers to a world after a zombie apocalypse where various survivors do their best to stay alive while confronting other rival groups.
The last ever The Walking Dead episode is set to air on AMC on Sunday, November 20.
