Possible explanations of the premiere episode’s confusing moments.

AMC finally dropped the premiere episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City. The spinoff looks exciting and promising so far, but it also left some questions that got fans speculating. We are about to break them down for you.

What happened to Negan’s wife and kid?

In the final season of the original show, we met Negan’s new wife Annie, and we learned that she was pregnant.

When Maggie asks Negan about them, he doesn’t say anything in response and just looks away. It seems that they are likely dead.

It might also be connected to another question: why is Negan wanted?

The marshals of New Babylon, who are looking for Negan, mention that Negan is wanted for killing “the magistrate” and four other people. We don’t know much about this allegation yet, but it might have something to do with what happened to Negan’s wife and child.

How did Maggie's son end up getting kidnapped?

In the episode, we find out that Maggie’s son got kidnapped by the Croat, an ex-member of The Saviors. She says her camp got raided by his group and a month later they took her son, but why didn’t Alexandria and the Commonwealth help her?

There are two possible explanations. Either Maggie decided to go off on her own with Hershel and left the rest of the group behind. Or when she talks about "camp," she might be referring to Hilltop, which we later learn got relocated, which might be the reason why she couldn’t ask for immediate help from other groups.

What’s Maggie’s plan?

Maggie is very secretive about her plan with Negan as she clearly doesn't trust him. But what is exactly Maggie’s plan?

One theory suggests that she might have made a deal with The Croat to hand over Negan in return for her son.

Why didn’t Maggie kill the marshal?

When the marshals catch up to Maggie and Negan, Maggie manages to take down the chief marshal. She's set to deliver the finishing blow to his head, but then she stops.

Why didn't she finish him off, even though he's clearly a potential threat to her plan? The reason is that the marshal previously mentions that he has a wife and three daughters. And before that, Negan asks Maggie how many husbands and fathers she has killed.
