And it's a recommendation we all should listen to.

Netflix has released an unusual musical by Jacques Audiard – Emilia Pérez. The main roles are played by Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz and Édgar Ramírez.

At this year's Cannes Film Festival, the film won the Jury Prize and the four leading actresses shared the Best Actress award. This is the story of Emilia Pérez, who has committed many atrocities in the past and is now starting her life with a clean slate.

James Cameron Has Nothing But Praise for Emilia Pérez

Although the movie has caused quite a mixed reaction, one of the most influential filmmakers of our time, James Cameron, was nothing but delighted with Emilia Pérez:

“What I saw that blew me away was Emilia Pérez. I have seen it three times... It's just not like any other film that's ever been made. It's bold, daring, a vision. It's beautifully executed. It's a beautiful piece of filmmaking.”

What Is Emilia Pérez About?

Mexican lawyer Rita meets Emilia Pérez at a business dinner in London. It soon becomes clear that four years ago, Rita helped Emilia. The lawyer is back working for a wealthy client, only now the women are doing the right thing.

Emilia founded a charity that helps relatives find the remains of cartel victims. At the client's request, Rita brings Jessi and her two sons to Mexico. Jessi was married to the late drug lord Manitas. Only Rita knows the secret from Emilia, who assures her that she and Manitas are related.

The client dotes on Jessi's sons and dislikes the adventures of the widow, who seems ready to remarry. And no matter how hard Emilia tries to escape the past, it keeps catching up with her.

Emilia Pérez Is a Soap Opera at Its Best

The plot of the movie is in many ways reminiscent of a Mexican soap opera. However, while in TV shows the characters often lie in a coma for a long time or suddenly find out about the existence of a twin, in Emilia Pérez there is a radical change in appearance.

But we will not reveal all the secrets, especially since director Jacques Audiard himself does not devote much screen time to physical changes.

The director is more concerned with the question of whether a person can change at the snap of a finger, start life from scratch and forget or even try to somehow correct the past.

Emilia Pérez Is a Passionate and Dynamic Work

Most of Jacques Audiard's films tell the story of a person who transcends the limits imposed by fate and circumstance. According to the director's vision, even under the heaviest of burdens, even in the most worthless and seemingly lost creature, there is a spark that can ignite a flame.

It is only logical that Audiard's search for another inner fire led him to Mexico, to characters who are passionate in every sense of the word.
