The Only Riverdale Couple We Wanted Didn’t Even Share a Kiss, And The Excuse Is Pathetic
What a way to ruin a finale.
If there's one thing that all Riverdale fans can agree on, it's that the show's seventh and final season did something that hadn't been done in years. It brought the fun, nostalgic feeling of the early seasons of Riverdale back to the screens and made the viewers very happy. At least at first.
But as the season of The CW's most nonsense teen drama ever went on, fans were met with more and more disappointing developments.
Instead of going back to their normal timeline, the characters were stuck in the '50s for the rest of the season, and instead of exploring the pairings that fans actually cared about, the writers decided to end the show with the most insane twist.
As it turns out, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa actually has the answers to any questions you may have had about the finale. Too bad you might not like those answers.
When asked by TVLine why Riverdale never explored the romance between Cole Sprouse's Jughead and KJ Apa's Archie, when they had the perfect opportunity and a whole legion of viewers to happily embrace any romantic notions, Aguirre-Sacasa explained:
“We did not shoot KJ and Cole hooking up. <...> We hadn’t even really laid even the barest seed of there being a romance between Archie and Jughead. Not even a whisper of that. We hadn’t really explored or even hinted at that, where we had with all the other couplings. It was just like, ‘Is this a cheat if we do this?'”
While the showrunner's point is understandable, it doesn't sound very convincing considering that the show's main romantic drama ended in a four-person relationship. A foursome that included both Jughead and Archie in the end. Sounds a lot more "cheaty", doesn't it?
Whether you liked Riverdale's controversial finale or not, you have to come to terms with it. After all, in the 7 years that the show has been on the air, fans have had just enough time to provide a lifetime supply of fanfiction for those who want more.
And if you have a particular nostalgia for the early seasons of Riverdale, you can re-watch the show on Netflix.
