The writers better not kill off our only hope.

Summary:

  • General Hospital is an ABC soap opera that has been on the air since 1963.
  • For the past year, the show has been heavily criticized by fans for focusing on the most boring stories.
  • However, the storyline of Damian Spinelli keeps the viewers hopeful as it develops.

It would have been very foolish to watch a show that's been around for more than six decades and expect a whole bunch of new characters and storylines.

People who have been watching soaps for years know that while the genre allows for the most insane and unexpected twists and turns, it mostly just reuses the same concepts and tropes over and over again, trying to find a new perspective on some of them.

That doesn't mean that all soap operas are boring. What it does mean is that the writers must have a perfect understanding of character dynamics and be interested in finding more nuance in their stories. But that doesn't seem to be the case with General Hospital.

The only character whose fans are somewhat intrigued by the turn his development has taken is Damian Spinelli.

What Happened to General Hospital’s Spinelli?

If Spinelli's case proves anything, it's that the plot doesn't have to be complicated to keep viewers hooked. In the absence of meaningful events and connections in the characters' lives, fans of the show have learned to appreciate smaller gestures from the writers.

The only thing that seems to be changing for Spinelli in Port Charles is the fact that his character is beginning to exist outside of the crime arc. Moving him away from the mob allows the creative team to explore other sides of him, make more connections, and give a start to new endeavors that may reappear later.

So far, the fans are most excited to see him build up the circle of friends, not to mention the path for something to come up with Maxie. Maybe the cuteness of Cody and Sasha playing matchmaker and Spinelli trying to see if it's worth letting the guard down isn't what you'd expect from their usual General Hospital episode, but it's a much-needed breath of fresh air.

The only thing General Hospital fans can do now is sit back, enjoy the show, and pray that the story doesn't get ruined by some kind of unexpected betrayal, memory loss, or baby drama, because those seem to be the only three approaches the show takes to creating drama these days.

Tune in to General Hospital on ABC to see what lies ahead for Maxie and Spinelli. The show airs Monday through Friday, so make sure you do not miss an episode.
