The One We Don't Talk About: Why Joey Sucked Compared to Friends
The beloved sitcom of the '90s has a dark stain on its reputation – the unfortunate spinoff Joey that has totally ruined the aftertaste of Friends.
While Friends' legacy lives on happily 30 years after the show's original release, even the most hardcore fans prefer to ignore its sequel completely, never even mentioning its existence in the canon.
We are no exception, but today we are going to tell you why you need to stay as far away from Joey as humanly possible.
Here are five plot holes that Joey is responsible for.
1. Joey's Personality Totally Changed
We loved Joey's childlike naiveté on Friends – he may not have been the smartest of the six, but his attention to detail in certain situations easily made up for it.
Well, he lost all of that on his own show, where he got progressively dumber with each episode.
He couldn't even outsmart a foreign guy in an English class. Joey was also always known to be quite a ladies' man, but that was over in the sequel as well.
2. Joey Lost Touch with the Group
The essence of Friends was how close the group always was, and Joey had a deep and meaningful connection with each one of them.
Apparently, his move to Hollywood meant that Joey completely forgot about the people he spent the last 10 (or so) years of his life with.
How else would you explain that he barely mentioned (let alone called or visited) any of the five for two seasons and when he did, he didn't even use their names?
3. Joey's Dad Was Bitter All of a Sudden
Robert Costanzo, who played Joey's dad on both Friends and Joey, seemed to change his mind about Joey's life choices out of the blue.
His character always supported Joey's decision to become an actor, even when he couldn't get any proper jobs.
Then, Joey became pretty successful in the spinoff, and his dad suddenly announced that he didn't approve of his son's career. Make it make sense!
4. Gina's Son Existence Was Unbelievable
One of the most memorable Friends episodes centered around Joey's teen sister getting pregnant and Joey being beside himself with rage.
This was certainly presented to us as the first time Joey had gone through something like this, but the sequel would have us believe that the same thing happened to Joey's other sister, and he was OK with it.
We will not even hold the fact that Gina was played by a different actress on Friends against the spinoff, but Michael should have been present in the prequel (at least in the episode where Gina was).
5. Eddie Supposedly Had a Crazy Twin
Remember Chandler's insane roommate Eddie? Well, Adam Goldberg returned to play another crazy character on Joey.
Recasting actors is fine with us, but Jimmy, Joey's high school bestie, was literally Eddie's twin both in terms of appearance and personality.
Shouldn't Joey have said something about Eddie bearing an uncanny resemblance to his childhood friend then?
These inconsistencies are just the tip of the iceberg, trust us.
Joey could have been such a beautiful show about Joey's solo adventures – instead, it just ended up insulting Friends' memory.
