The One and Only Musical Christopher Nolan Doesn't Hate
This is a rare occasion for the prominent director to speak frankly about his personal cinema tastes.
Christopher Nolan may seem to be a filmmaker that just doesn’t accept “merry” film genres into his own cinematic universe — and the point is that he’s really like this.
While Nolan always directs from his own scripts that are based on deep philosophical or scientific questions, he even more than unlikely will ever take up some comedy or musical project. Though there’s only one existing musical that Christopher Nolan actually likes (and a lot).
Some hidden secrets of the proclaimed director were unveiled in Tom Shone’s book The Nolan Variations where Nolan himself gets candid about his career path and some personal cinematic preferences.
It also may come as a shock for many fans of his, but Christopher Nolan happens to be a devoted fan of La La Land — a musical hit made by Damien Chazelle with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the leading roles.
Nolan confessed that he’d watched the musical three or even four times calling it “an extraordinary film” and “amazing piece of directing,” although he can’t list himself as a real fan of this genre.
This once again shows that Christopher Nolan, apart from his work preferences, has also a very good taste as a viewer — Chazelle’s La La Land was released in 2016 and since then has conquered hearts of millions of people by portraying a bittersweet love story between Mia (played by Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) accompanied by masterly cinematography and the soundtrack that definitely stays with the viewer forever.
For many of the musical's fans the end of its era is still associated with that awkward situation that happened at the Oscars ceremony in 2017. Back then, La La Land was mistakenly called Best Picture and the whole crew went up to the stage to take their awards, but then a big change of plan occurred.
It turned out that someone made a mistake with the name in the envelope and the Best Picture award was supposed to be given to Moonlight which eventually received that Oscar. And though Christopher Nolan didn’t share his thoughts on whether it truly was a mistake or not, there are still many people out there who would be ready to argue with the Academy.
