Is A Murder at the End of the World just another dimension?

Summary:

  • The OA season 2 concludes with characters in a parallel dimension; Brit Marling's character went into a coma.
  • A fan theory connects The OA and A Murder at the End of the World, suggesting the latter is a near-death experience for The OA.
  • This dimension features deliberate inconsistencies, like altered filming locations and actor details.
  • Fan theory implies The OA exists in AMATEOTW's dimension during her coma.

The second season of The OA received a finale that placed the project among the greatest shows in history.

The OA Season Two Finale Introduced a Dimension Similar to Ours

The dimension that Detective Karim sees in the attic window of the cursed house, and in which The OA and Hap find themselves, is closely intertwined with the actual state of affairs in our reality – there Prairie / Nina is called Brit, like the actress Brit Marling who plays her, and Professor Hap is called Jason Isaacs – like the actor who plays him.

The rest of the picture, however, does not add up. The third dimension masquerades as a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of The OA, but we see many inconsistencies: the filming we are shown takes place in London, but The OA was actually filmed in California and New York.

Jason Isaacs is not actually married to Brit Marling, and she doesn't have short hair. The creators are playing a cruel joke on our consciousness and breaking a fourth wall – making it clear that the show's set (presented as our reality) is just another dimension, one of an infinite number.

AMATEOTW Is The OA's Near-Death Experience

Even the cancellation of the project was not the end of The OA, just as death is not the end in the show. Presumably, The OA lived on, but in another project. One Redditor has proposed a wild theory that connects The OA and A Murder at the End of the World, and it looks very convincing.

The theory is that Brit Marling's character in A Murder at the End of the World is another dimension that Nina/The OA may have ended up in after her injury and subsequent coma at the end of season two. AMATEOTW only happened because The OA was canceled, and now plays a major role in what the third season will look like if the project is revived.

The gist is best conveyed by the quote from the author of the theory:

"Ultimately, AMATEOTW is a limited experience happening between the time The OA dies and eventually comes back to life."

When discussing the possibility of reviving The OA, fans offered their own options for how such a gap in time could be justified. One of these options was that The OA (now called Brit) could have been in a coma the entire time the show was not being filmed, and while her body was out, her mind could well have been transferred to a dimension similar to A Murder at the End of the World.
