The Marvels Subtly Trolled Captain Marvel Haters in First Teaser, But No One Noticed

The trailer for The Marvels has finally dropped, and it looks like the film will continue the trend started by Captain Marvel in 2019.

There were many polarizing opinions about the plot and the titular superhero, but the movie had a killer selection of additional music, including songs by Nirvana, Heart, R.E.M., and many more.

The only worthy competitor in this field within the MCU may be James Gunn with his Guardians of the Galaxy films.

But the first trailer goes one step further and adds a clever subtext to its song of choice.

The trailer footage is accompanied by the song Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys, and fans who have paid attention to the lyrics believe it is meant to troll the haters of the original movie.

One of the most common points of criticism was that Carol Danvers, portrayed by Brie Larson, almost never smiled throughout the movie.

This sparked a lengthy online debate, which Larson even participated in, responding with redesigned posters of various superheroes to prove how silly overused smiling is.

Now, the first words of the song featured in the trailer are:

"Well, now, don't you tell me to smile

You stick around I'll make it worth your while."

This led fans to believe that it was a clever way for the creators to poke fun at those who were upset by the aforementioned controversy.

However, no official statement has been made, so it could just be a coincidence.

They also say that the trailer looks surprisingly fun and colorful, reminiscent of the earlier MCU films.

Which is a good sign, considering the rather mixed reception of the latest installment in the franchise, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The Marvels will continue the story of Carol Danvers, now accompanied by Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan ( Iman Vellani ), as they try to unravel the mystery of why their powers suddenly began to malfunction.

As seen in the trailer, they will be opposed by Dar-Benn, portrayed by Zawe Ashton, a Kree who most likely has her own personal score to settle with Carol, given the events of the previous movie.

The film is scheduled for release on November 10, 2023.
