The Marvels' Most Expensive Actor Isn't Even One Of The Main Trio
The cast salaries for the just-released movie are pretty interesting, especially when compared to the MCU's 2012 superhero team-up.
Summary:
- The Marvels is currently in a delicate situation, as the failure of the film could affect the entire franchise
- Cast salaries seem surprisingly modest, especially compared to 2012's The Avengers
- The highest paid actor is not even one of the main characters, playing a supporting role in the story
The latest addition to the MCU, The Marvels, is finally upon us, so the next few days will prove whether the myriad of concerns about the movie were true.
So far, The Marvels has received some pretty polarizing reviews from early screenings, which has only muddied the waters further, and box office projections have been pretty depressing as well.
The projected debut weekend grosses for The Marvels aren't exactly inspiring, ranging between $50 million and $75 million, which is less than both Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the MCU's weakest recent installments.
With that in mind, it is quite interesting to see how much was spent on cast salaries, especially for the main trio of heroes at the center of the story.
How Much Was The Marvels’ Main Trio Paid?
Brie Larson, who portrays Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, was reportedly paid $5 million for her appearance in the movie.
This is the third time the actress has portrayed the character, following her debut in 2019's Captain Marvel and a rather brief appearance in Avengers: Endgame later that year.
Teyonah Parris, who reprised her role as Monica Rambeau from 2021's WandaVision TV series, earned $1 million for her character's big-screen debut.
Iman Vellani, whose character Kamala Khan also made her first feature film appearance after the 2022 Ms. Marvel TV series, earned $550,000 for her part.
Zawe Ashton, who portrayed the film's antagonist, Dar-Benn, earned $250,000 for the film.
Supporting MCU Veteran Earned the Most
Curiously, the most expensive actor in the movie isn't even the focus of the story, as MCU veteran Samuel L. Jackson was reportedly paid a staggering $7 million to reprise his role as Nick Fury.
Compared to the biggest superhero team-up movie from over a decade ago, The Avengers, the spending on actors seems pretty modest, as the main trio from the 2012 film, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth were paid $10 million, $3 million and $3 million upfront, respectively.
Considering that the new group of heroes, with the exception of Carol Danvers, are relatively unknown and making their big screen debut, the salaries aren't as high as one might have expected.
The Marvels is pretty important for the MCU in general because if it flops, the failure could affect the entire franchise, but we will learn the truth soon enough as the movie premiered on November 10, 2023.
