Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels starring Brie Larson only recently opened its critics' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and things are not looking good. Captain Marvel’s latest outing failed to impress the early critics, and while we’re waiting for the audience score, the general expectations from the movie already plummeted.
At least, The Marvels managed to enter the MCU ’s top three — granted, it’s the top three of worst-rated Marvel movies to date.
What’s the Current Rating of The Marvels?
Once again, at the time of writing, the audience score is yet to be revealed since people haven’t had the chance to watch The Marvels. We only have access to the early critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes which is also subject to change over time.
Currently, the general Tomatometer score of The Marvels is 60% which, while not exactly the MCU level of OK, doesn’t sound too bad. It’s also gradually improving before our eyes, seeing that it was recently sitting in the mid-50%s. However, the top critics' score is sitting at a far less comfortable 42%. What does it mean?
Judging by the top critics’ score, The Marvels is the third worst-rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes ever. With a 42% score, the film is only slightly ahead of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania with 39% and Eternals with 36%. That’s definitely not an optimal start to The Marvels’ theatrical run as the expectations are lowered now.
The Marvels Follows the MCU’s Recent Pattern
The MCU hasn’t been feeling so good lately, in general: the Multiverse Saga is performing dramatically worse than the previous Phases. In terms of popularity, box office returns, and reviews, the latest Marvel movies often disappoint, and Brie Larson’s new outing only confirms the overall trend we’ve been seeing.
The Marvels is not the only Multiverse Saga film in the bottom three list of the MCU entries on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, all three of them were released in the past two years and belong to this Phase, marking the general decline in quality. Thankfully, Marvel is already working on a “soft reboot” that’s rumored to happen with Avengers: Secret Wars.
