This one wasn’t on our 2023 MCU bingo card.

  • The Marvels is an action film produced by Marvel Studios.
  • It premiered on November 10 and was considered a flop with only $47M at the box office upon the first running weekend.
  • One of the celebrities who stepped up to defend the film on social media was the horror author Stephen King.

It is no secret that the superhero movie genre is not having its best times right now. While the MCU has been on a steady decline since the finale of the iconic Avengers franchise, the DCEU gave fans a lot of hope with the reboot, but proved to be underprepared after the premiere of The Flash.

Some industry professionals, as well as longtime viewers and fans of the genre, believe this has to do with people being fed up with the number of comic book movies that are either poor or average in quality, with little to no change or challenge. On the other hand, a large portion of the fan base angrily rejects any change that creators try to bring to the screen.

The fandom's hatred of Captain Marvel focused more on the persona of the actress behind the character, has gone on for so long that it seemed to have an effect on yet another premiere. The Marvels, the latest addition to the MCU's Phase 5, was deemed a failure after its opening weekend, earning the studio only $47 million at the box office.

While the internet is filled with sarcastic commentary aimed at proving a misogynistic point, The Marvels received support from the hero the studio never knew it needed.

Stephen King About The Marvels

One of the people who decided to comment on this topic was none other than an American horror and sci-fi author, Stephen King. The opinion he expressed on X (formerly known as Twitter) is more about the way the audience reacts to the movie rather than the content of the movie.

"I don’t go to MCU movies, don’t care for them, but I find this barely masked gloating over the low box office for THE MARVELS very unpleasant. Why gloat over failure?" King wrote.

This statement was followed by another, suggesting that the men who didn't like the idea of the female-driven movie just like to spread their disgust about everything they don't like.

As you can imagine, the post proved to be another point of controversy, attracting fans on both sides of the conflict. While some applauded King for being so direct in his message, others came to explain exactly what they found so unappealing about the adaptation.

This isn't the first time Stephen King has spoken out about pop culture in general and the superhero genre in particular. Back in May, the author praised The Flash after seeing the final cut of the film before its international premiere. As it turned out, the opinions of the general public and the author were quite different on this one as well.
