Turns out it’s not only Alicent’s dresses that have a deeper meaning.

Summary:

  • House of The Dragon is the HBO TV show based on the books of George R. R. Martin.
  • The show is considered to be the prequel to Game of Thrones that focuses exclusively on the Targaryen family.
  • Black and red were considered to be traditional Targaryen colors, hence why the color scheme has a lot of importance in the show.

It's no secret that the release of House of the Dragon sparked one of the most brutal wars on the Internet. If you've ever witnessed a war between two fandoms, House of the Dragon fans decided to keep it in the spirit of their favorite show and started fighting each other.

Just like the characters on their screens, the viewers decided which side to take in the upcoming battle. The names of the teams led by Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, Team Black and Team Green, weren't chosen at random either.

Black and red are the colors that originally represented the Targaryen family, while green is the color of House Hightower, with which Alicent brought her own children and dressed them. It is almost impossible to exist in the fandom without knowing this.

However, you can continue to ignore the male fashion of the show, as it doesn't have much to offer. From Corlys Velaryon, the richest man in the realm, who wears a single suit throughout the years covered in season 1, to King Viserys I himself, who is covered in the ugliest fabrics.

The only man whose fashion is worth your time is Daemon, as his costume has changed along with his attitude toward his family.

Why Daemon Targaryen Wasn’t Always Wearing Black

Over the course of the 16 years that have passed since the show's first season, we've seen Daemon Targaryen sport a number of different looks. From different hair lengths and styles to different colors of clothing. Daemon had a strong preference for red and black, but he wasn't afraid to pull off something gray.

House of The Dragon costume designer Jany Temime explained the change in Daemon's wardrobe, which came in waves throughout season 1, and the connection his clothes have to how he feels about his own home. A topic that his character is always conflicted about:

“He wears gray when he doesn’t want to be a Targaryen,” she noted for the Insider’s piece on the series’ fashion.

It's easy to see the pattern when you start analyzing Daemon's appearances one by one. Almost every single one of them, except for the time when he came back from the Stepstones and wanted to be proud of being a Targaryen warrior, he wears gray with simple white shirts.

When he returns from his travels with a gift for Rhaenyra, he wears gray because it's been years since he's been home and he feels quite distant from everyone. He also wears gray as he decides to go to war behind his brother's back. And again, far away, in Essos, surrounded by his new family of Lady Laena Velaryon and her daughters, he wears gray.

Daemon returns to red and black the moment he marries Rhaenyra. Feeling reunited not only with the love of his life, but with his true family, he returns to the colors he was meant to wear all along. Although, to be honest, no fan of Daemon would say no to him appearing in any kind of clothing. As long as it's not a long hooded cape, which usually only means death.

If you want to re-watch House of The Dragon season 1 to get back into the world and remember Daemon's fashion, you can do so by streaming the show on MAX. Season 2 is set to premiere in the summer of 2024, so keep an eye out for all the latest news and updates.
