Viewers should prepare to see one of the most charming characters die.

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult play the Russian monarchs Catherine II and Peter III in The Great show from Hulu.

The series has never been historically accurate, so the events that will be shown in the following season are far from real facts.

So, although one shouldn't watch The Great to learn more about Russian history, the show is good if you're up for some on-brand dark humor and vivid characters.

The previous season showed the end of the palace coup that brought Catherine to power. After imprisoning her husband in her own palace, the Empress began to radically change the life of the country.

She wanted to bring Russia closer to the ideal of a secular state. However, such serious reforms did not meet with the approval of her fellow citizens, and an attempt to abolish serfdom almost cost her her life.

In the new series, the Empress will try to improve relations with her husband after all that has happened between them. While Peter is busy with the child, she will gradually increase her influence abroad.

However, after the shocking events of season 2, it will be difficult for them to build a relationship. Spouses are unlikely to be able to even trust each other.

Peter witnessed an attempt on his life – Catherine attacked Peter's double, thinking it was her husband.

Although The Great is obviously not a historically accurate series, it still follows the main events in the fates of Catherine and Peter, which suggests that Peter will not survive the third season.

Many believed that he would die after the coup in the first season, since in real life these events followed each other. However, the charming monarch made it through the season 2 unscathed.

At the end of the second season, the relationship between Catherine and Peter is quite strained, and it is possible that the couple's counseling will not be able to save them, which could lead to another attempt to take Peter's life — this time a successful one.

Although it is difficult to imagine the series without Nicholas Hoult and his Peter, it is unlikely that the writers and creators of The Great will ignore how the real story developed in this particular aspect.

Fans will be able to find out very soon – The Great season 3 will be released on May 12 on Hulu.
