The Game of Thrones Ending Pretty Much Everyone Wanted But Didn't Get
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a fan of Game of Thrones must be in want of a better finale than they got.
After 8 seasons of drama, tension and full-blooded investment in the story and its characters, the ending of Game of Thrones was, to say the least, underwhelming.
But what did people want from it?
Well, there have been several ideas put forward in the years since the series ended. But these three seem to be the most popular among those fans who have voiced an opinion.
The White Walkers run riot across Westeros
The White Walkers were the "winter" that, throughout the series, was "coming". It was pretty much nailed on that there would be a huge battle at the conclusion of the series that would see them wreak havoc.
The 5 Game of Thrones Onscreen Mistakes Only Eagle-Eyed Fans Notice
Whether they would ultimately be successful in their quest was never quite certain. But one thing that all fans of the show agreed on was that they wouldn't simply be suddenly defeated. But if they were to be beaten, it should have been at some significant cost.
Failing to home in on the whole "winter is coming" prophecy and make it a key part of a climactic end to the series was a failure on the part of the writers.
Dany doesn't descend into madness
Ok, so there is a theme of mad monarchs throughout Targaryen history. But Dany? Really? Now, crushing viewers' hopes and expectations was, of course, a key part of the appeal of GoT. We genuinely never knew what would happen next.
But for a finale, it just feels as though madness getting a grip of Dany was a bit cheap. How much better would it have been had she not been driven insane? Imagine her refusing to cause destruction – and then being killed.
Game of Thrones Should Thank Fans For Its Most Iconic Casting
We would have the same drama, but with the added element of her breaking free of that particular Targaryen trait. Maybe we'd still be discussing whether this went down as a victory or a defeat instead of lamenting the ending one of the show's most popular characters was saddled with.
Bran uses his powers to earn his coronation
Bran the Broken's coronation was a shock to everybody and was something of a letdown for many. And this was partly because there seemed no real reason for him to be king.
Sure, Tyrell argues that he deserves it because he "can see into the past", and that makes sense. But it also begs the question of why these powers weren't a key feature of bringing the story to its conclusion.
Had that been the case, Bran being named king would have made sense.
