The Follow-up to Beverly Hills Cop Was Planned as a TV Series

The much-loved cheeky detective Axel Foley will soon be back on the big screen, as in the summer of 2024, after years of development hell, a sequel to the story after 30 years is planned for release on Netflix, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Axel's story could have continued even earlier, however, as a TV series was planned before the fourth film.

A one-hour pilot episode was filmed for CBS in 2013, but development of the show was halted due to Murphy's reluctance to return to the role.

Murphy Was Unwilling to Reprise the Role After Beverly Hills Cop III Flopped

The reason Murphy was so reluctant to return to the role that seemed to bring him the most fame was because Beverly Hills Cop III was so disastrous.

The film was directed by John Landis, with whom Murphy had already collaborated on the defining comedies of their era, Trading Places and Coming to America. But the third Axel Foley installment was, in Murphy's opinion, a purely commercial and shallow project.

'Every bad decision I've made has been based on money,' he explained. 'I grew up in the projects and you don't turn down money there. You take it, because you never know when it's all going to end. I made Beverly Hills Cop III because they offered me $15 million. That $15 million was worth having Roger Ebert's thumb up my ass.'

Therefore, Murphy felt that if a sequel was to become a reality, it would have to be made with love.

'If we do that movie, it has to be right. Not just thrown together to get a big check. I don't need anymore of those.'
