The Eddie Murphy Movie Even The Actor Himself Called 'Garbage' is Now on Prime
Before a new installment in a cult franchise, why not revisit a movie that is... detested by its own actor?
Summary
- The Beverly Hills Cop franchise has defined Eddie Murphy 's career for years, with a fourth film scheduled for release in 2024.
- Before that, however, Murphy was reluctant to return to the role. The reason was the absolute failure of Beverly Hills Cop III.
- Even though the actor hates that movie, it's something to turn to before the new one comes out, especially since it's available on Prime.
Eddie Murphy is one of Hollywood's most popular and certainly most expensive actors. From SNL sketches to The Golden Child, from The Nutty Professor and Dr. Dolittle to Dreamgirls and Dolemite Is My Name, his career has reached insurmountable heights over four decades thanks to his acting talent and ability to endear himself to audiences with his charisma and gift for inhabiting both comedic and deeply dramatic roles.
But even the most successful of us have low points. Murphy's incredibly prolific track record includes not only critically and commercially acclaimed films, but also those that were shamelessly panned by almost everyone. There is one movie, however, that Eddie Murphy personally despises — it's Beverly Hills Cop III. In anticipation of the fourth installment, we suggest you revisit it, as it is now available on Prime Video.
The Follow-up to Beverly Hills Cop Was Planned as a TV Series
The much-loved cheeky detective Axel Foley will soon be back on the big screen, as in the summer of 2024, after years of development hell, a sequel to the story after 30 years is planned for release on Netflix, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Axel's story could have continued even earlier, however, as a TV series was planned before the fourth film.
A one-hour pilot episode was filmed for CBS in 2013, but development of the show was halted due to Murphy's reluctance to return to the role.
Murphy Was Unwilling to Reprise the Role After Beverly Hills Cop III Flopped
The reason Murphy was so reluctant to return to the role that seemed to bring him the most fame was because Beverly Hills Cop III was so disastrous.
The film was directed by John Landis, with whom Murphy had already collaborated on the defining comedies of their era, Trading Places and Coming to America. But the third Axel Foley installment was, in Murphy's opinion, a purely commercial and shallow project.
'Every bad decision I've made has been based on money,' he explained. 'I grew up in the projects and you don't turn down money there. You take it, because you never know when it's all going to end. I made Beverly Hills Cop III because they offered me $15 million. That $15 million was worth having Roger Ebert's thumb up my ass.'
Therefore, Murphy felt that if a sequel was to become a reality, it would have to be made with love.
'If we do that movie, it has to be right. Not just thrown together to get a big check. I don't need anymore of those.'
One of Murphy’s Least Successful Films Is Now on Prime
And it looks like the upcoming Axel F has really fulfilled Murphy's wishes, as it's already scheduled for release in mid-2024. Until then, we suggest you revisit the previous installment, no matter how awful it was, and here's how you can do it.
Beverly Hills Cop III is now available on Prime Video with a Paramount+ subscription.
