It is a crime against cinema.

The genre of a drama is like a two-edged sword - you can bring some relatable characters and real-life conflicts to the big screen, but poor writing and acting can easily spoil the authenticity of what’s going on in a movie.

Probably, it’s exactly what happened with Prime’s new drama that is now holding the second place in the platform’s global chart these days. Its miserable critical score of 0% on RT is a sign of the film’s bad quality, but can it maybe fall into the “so bad that it’s good” category?

The movie’s plot revolves around Ava, who is left heartbroken by her husband Dallas. She isn’t gonna just sit around and panic, and that’s why she tries to understand why her ex did that, only to find out that he was a liar whose deeds trashed their marriage.

Starting as a generic divorce drama, the film then steps into the field of thrillers, pretending to put suspense on Dallas’ true identity and so on, but in fact fails to do it all.

The point is both the drama and the thriller aspects of this movie are extremely clumsy, and we’re not given the chance to see something at least a little bit similar to Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver ’s Marriage Story.

What we receive is plain dialogues, awfully overlong sequences and, presumably, the worst sex scene ever made in the movie history (yes, much worse than the ones in Fifty Shades of Grey).

The main problem of this drama is that it’s just boring, and even if you’re an extremely empathic person, you can’t really relate to Ava’s trauma, because her dull lines start putting you to sleep after a while.

Titled Divorce in the Black, the movie just fails on all fronts. While its filmmaker Tyler Perry is notorious for making rotten movies, the leading cast of Meagan Good (Harlem) and Cory Hardrict (Brotherly Love) can’t save it from being a disaster too.

This flick can only serve as a guilty pleasure for watching with friends and laughing at its goofiness and awkwardness. Therefore, you can check it out, as Divorce in the Black is available for streaming on Prime.
