The Boys Seems to Descend Into The Very Thing It Pokes Fun At
A new update on the future of the series suggests that The Boys may become another overblown franchise with multiple spin-offs and many seasons.
The Boys TV franchise, based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis, will soon expand with its second spin-off TV show, Gen V, in addition to The Boys Presents: Diabolical and three seasons of the main series.
But it seems The Boys' growth won't stop there, as the franchise is on its way to becoming another kind of superhero cinematic (or rather TV) universe, similar to other mainstream franchises like Marvel or DC, which The Boys has been satirizing this entire time.
Vernon Sanders, the co-head of TV at Amazon Studios, said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that there are already long-term plans for the future of the franchise.
He mentioned that Eric Kripke, the creator of the original series, "has had a vision for what this all leads to for years," and if he wants to continue developing the franchise, the studio is eager to work with him.
For now, though, discussions about the next step are ongoing, and the main focus for The Boys remains Gen V and the upcoming fourth season of the main show.
It certainly looks like we might get even more spin-offs or more seasons of the already existing ones, apart from the continuation of the main story, if the creator decides to continue with his vision.
However, fans are not overly positive about such a prospect for a number of reasons.
First of all, they believe that oversaturation is a real problem that has plagued many major franchises, such as the MCU, Star Wars, DCU, and others.
Too much content set in The Boys' universe can easily lead to fans burning out and losing interest in the franchise altogether.
They also believe that the later seasons of the main series, while still relatively good, have been hit and miss compared to the first season, which may indicate that the creators are running out of ideas.
It is not yet clear whether Gen V and the upcoming season 4 will be good or bad, but if The Boys becomes another huge franchise, the drop in quality is almost inevitable.
The first three episodes of Gen V will be released on September 29, 2023, while the release date for The Boys season 4 hasn't been announced yet.
