The annual Emmy nominations were announced the other day, and they brought some familiar faces as well as some new ones into the spotlight. Several shows, including Barry, Succession, Ted Last of Us, and Wednesday, proved to be standout shows again, earning their share of notable nods.
With a mix of surprises and snubs, the 2023 Emmy Nominations have left fans buzzing and anticipating. Here are the 2023 Emmy nominees that pleasantly surprised fans, and those snubbed for unknown reasons.
Surprise: Obi-Wan Kenobi
Despite facing stiff competition and receiving mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, Obi-Wan Kenobi scored a surprise nomination for Best Limited Series, which may have been helped by its built-in Star Wars fan base and Ewan McGregor 's charismatic performance and enduring appeal to voters.
Snub: Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford was doubly snubbed this year, despite the potential for two acting nominations for the movie star in the dramas 1923 and Shrinking. But given that his co-stars were nominated, Ford's omission for his acclaimed performance in Shrinking is even more puzzling.
Surprise: Survivor
Survivor's nomination in the Best Competition Program category is a remarkable comeback, considering the reality show hadn't been nominated for seven years in a row. It's a testament to the long-running show's innovative, yet traditional approach and dedicated fan base that it has been able to keep its format and hosts while attracting new viewers.
Snub: Only Murders in the Building
Only Murders in the Building, the mystery-comedy-drama series, remains a favorite of the TV Academy, once again receiving a number of nominations. The popular drama about a 1970s band exceeded expectations with nine nominations, including nods for lead actress Riley Keough and supporting actress Camila Morrone. The biggest snub, however, came when none of the band's songs were nominated, considering how much they were featured in the show.
Surprise: Jury Duty
The mockumentary series scored a surprise nomination in the Best Comedy Series category, beating out favorites like Poker Face and Shrinking. With its unique concept of a fake trial and a clueless jury, the inclusion of the show in the comedy category was unexpected but definitely well-deserved.
Snub: What We Do in the Shadows
Despite receiving writing nods for previous seasons, FX's supernatural comedy was unexpectedly ignored in this year's major nominations. With only 4 nominations, none of the categories include significant recognition of the cast's work and the show's biting humor and that feels personal.
