And you wouldn’t want to grow up with either of them.

Summary:

  • The Big Bang Theory was a CBS sitcom that ran from 2007 to 2019.
  • The show focused on a group of nerdy friends who meet a new neighbor, Penny, and invite her into their friendship to navigate the world together.
  • Each character had some issues in their upbringing, and the show explored these stories through the characters of their mothers.

There are a lot of reasons why The Big Bang Theory has become as popular as it is. From the fact that it fills a niche in sitcoms about not-so-cool kids, as opposed to Friends or How I Met Your Mother, to the really good acting and very well-thought-out sets.

But one of the main reasons why people continue to be drawn to these characters years after the show ends is because they resonate with them on so many levels. They find these characters not only funny, but relatable in their upbringing, motivations, and daily struggles. Even though not many people in the audience are actual geniuses.

The struggles some of the characters have with their mothers, for example, is a subject that resonates with many people. And seeing how conflicted Leonard feels about his mother constantly belittling him in front of his friends, many feel not only sympathy for him, but also some understanding of his problem.

What many viewers seem to forget, however, is that Leonard is not the only one who struggled with his mother throughout his adult life. Amy has similar issues. And, it could be argued, her mother did even more damage to her growing up.

Amy’s Mother Helicopter Parenting

The Big Bang Theory's parenting methods have sparked a lengthy discussion on the r/bigbangtheory subreddit. The struggle between Leonard and Amy's childhood trauma has produced some interesting insights.

Compared to Beverly, who gave her son nothing but the cold shoulder throughout his life, Amy's mother was much more invasive. Invasive to the point where her rules began to resemble the rules of a religious cult rather than a protective parent.

Some fans go so far as to say that her mother's upbringing was the direct cause of her current personality flaws:

“People typically learn social cues from making mistakes as a kid. Amy likely got her original robotic personality from her mother trying to stop those mistakes before they happened. Under a different parental situation, Amy probably could’ve developed into a more well adjusted person prior to meeting the group,” Redditor ChildofObama said.

If you were to choose between the mothers portrayed in the show, Mary Cooper would probably be the safest choice. And it already says a lot about the series itself. If you want to make up your mind, you can go ahead and rewatch The Big Bang Theory on Max.
