This is a canon event that could not ever be undone.

One of the storylines that definitely overshadowed the entire Young Sheldon series was the death of George Sr. Those who watched The Big Bang Theory knew it was coming from the beginning, and found themselves anxiously trying to figure out how and when it was going to happen.

But no matter how much time they had to prepare, it did not help to keep the emotions intact. Young Sheldon's finale was heartbreaking and emotional, but the longer fans of the show reflect on it, the more obvious it becomes that George's death was the trigger that set the show in motion in the first place.

Why Did George Cooper Sr. Die?

Since Young Sheldon was created in 2017, when The Big Bang Theory had been on the air for 10 years and had created a lore of its own, there was no way the writers could stretch the plot enough to keep Sheldon's father alive. Even though some fans vouched for it, the change was too massive to push through.

This created a cycle in which George Cooper died in The Big Bang Theory canon because of what was shown in Young Sheldon, while Young Sheldon's events were dictated by The Big Bang Theory. But even if we could just take that element away from both shows and let Lance Barber's George live, it wouldn't make The Big Bang Theory any better.

While we can all agree on how annoying Sheldon was, his character carried the show through its lowest points. Sure, his jokes were more mean than not, and his inability to read social cues often felt forced, but Sheldon was the face of The Big Bang Theory for years, and he would not be the same without his father by his side.

Wouldn't he be better? Absolutely! In fact, all of his friends and Amy would probably love this more mature and emotionally stable version of Sheldon much more than the one they got in the original. However, it could easily ruin the group dynamic and make The Big Bang Theory less entertaining.

Even though the entire franchise has no chance of surviving without George Cooper's death, it is still one of the most heartbreaking moments in both shows. However, if you already miss Young Sheldon and can’t help but want to watch it again, you can do so on Netflix. The Big Bang Theory is available for streaming on Max.
