The shark is now swimming right in the heart of France!

Back in 2018, Jason Statham ’s sci-fi action has rekindled people’s interest in shark movies, as The Meg became hugely successful and grossed over $530 million against a budget of $130 million. The action-packed story of a group of scientists who confront a giant megalodon shark in the Pacific Ocean was extremely spectacular, yet horrifying.

Today, Netflix presents its own take on shark flicks, as another movie of this kind has just premiered on the platform. However, now it has no deal with both Statham and America, as here we have quite an usual setting and a more sophisticated premise.

The thriller starts by showing Paris’ government, who are preparing to host the World Triathlon Championships (talk about timing!). Everything goes according to their plan, however, they are completely unaware of the fact there is an enormous shark swimming deep in the Seine.

The only person who realizes that the competition can turn into a bloodbath is Sophia, a scientist who discovers that the shark is threatening to reach the surface and to kill the sportsmen. She embarks on a complicated journey to save both Paris and the river.

This synopsis proves the movie creators clearly draw inspiration from the most classic shark film, Steven Spielberg ’s cultish Jaws (1975) and the whole movie franchise about a giant white shark that attacks on people in the US in its thirst for blood.

However, the reasonable decision to set it in Paris makes it not only a unique shark flick, but also a socially important one. The point is France is about to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, and most French people are against it. Their objections include the protests against holding part of the ceremonies on the Seine, the symbol of Paris.

Thus, this movie, titled Under Paris, calls back the most relevant issue for all French these days, appearing to be a must-watch besides that. Its sudden deaths, impeccable shark design and gradually heated tone make it an incredibly suspenseful thriller.

Presumably, it’s even the best shark movie since Jaws, or at least one of the best ones, so don’t miss the opportunity to see a bloodthirsty creature in the Seine, as Under Paris is already available for streaming on Netflix.
