The Acolyte Has a Chance to Finally Fix One of Star Wars' Biggest Flaws
Fans put their hopes in what appears to be the first "sith-led" story in Star Wars universe.
With the Star Wars franchise apparently aiming to attract adult audience, fans are about to receive what appears to be the first ever screen adaptation of a villain's story — The Acolyte.
Speaking to TechRadar, the series' star Dafne Keen revealed that the upcoming show will be a completely new thing in the Star Wars universe.
"As you know, it's set 100 years before the prequel movies, and it's kind of an explanation of how the Sith infiltrated the Jedi. It's a Sith-led story, which has never been done before," Keen told the outlet.
While fans seem to be genuinely excited about the show in the wake of Andor 's success, there is one fear: that the villain will receive a cliché redemption arc and turn to the good side in the end.
"If they actually remain Sith throughout the series that'll be impressive for Disney for once," said Twitter user RIVERN02.
Star Wars villains (or, more specifically, the way Star Wars actually handles them) is one of the franchise's biggest flaws. There are quite a few iconic villains in Star Wars universe, but only a handful got a good enough treatment over the years, with majority either getting killed off or redeeming themselves somehow. However, if the main villain not only remains the center of the story but also manages to stick to being evil, then it would definitely be a breath of fresh air not only for the Star Wars franchise, but for the entire geek community as well. This would also provide a unique opportunity to explore the motivations behind the villain's actions and his/her relationship with the heroes. Ultimately, this could bring a new level of depth to the Star Wars universe and create an even greater appreciation for the franchise.
According to Keen, "the whole experience is wonderful, and [she is] already excited for people to see it."
The Acolyte is set a century before the events of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, with the show focusing on the era of the High Republic — a time when the Jedi order was at its peak.
The series began filming in October. It will consist of eight episodes upon release, although Disney Plus is yet to reveal the premiere date.
