That John Wick 4 Staircase Scene Has a Deeper Meaning Than You Thought
A hidden mythological gem in an iconic action movie.
The John Wick franchise has become known for its thrilling action scenes, each one seemingly more intense than the last.
But in the highly anticipated fourth movie, one particular scene stands out for its symbolic depth and mythological references: the staircase fight.
As we watch John Wick make his way up the stairs, taking on an army of assassins with guns and knives, we may not realize the deeper meaning behind this scene.
The staircase itself is a powerful symbol, representing a journey and ascent toward a higher level of consciousness or spirituality.
In many mythological stories, ascending a staircase is seen as a challenge that must be overcome in order to achieve a higher state of being.
The staircase scene represents the story of Sisyphus — the founder and king of Ephyra, who was tortured by the God of the underworld, Hades, for tricking death twice (and as we know John Wick tricked it even more).
Sisyphus had to roll a huge boulder up a steep hill in Tartarus till his last day, and every time he pushed it up, the boulder rolled down and made Sisyphus start all over again. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
But the mythology doesn't end with the staircase itself. Throughout the scene, there are also nods to various symbolic and religious references, from the use of swords and crosses to the way the characters move and fight.
These symbols serve to deepen the metaphorical meaning behind the struggle, reminding the viewer that John's journey is not only physical but spiritual as well.
Unlike Sisyphus, in the end John Wick was able to roll the boulder up with some help from Donnie Yen Caine and Tracker and beat death one more time.
And there is no doubt he did and will continue telling his story in John Wick 5.
