'Terrible, but Oddly Watchable' Romcom is the Top Movie on Netflix Right Now
Lindsay Lohan continues to embrace her 'Lohan-aissance'.
Summary
- Lindsay Lohan 's career has seen a resurgence in recent years.
- Despite the fact that movies with her participation do not have the former glory, they are released on a regular basis.
- As such, on March 15, a new, not of the highest quality, but watchable rom-com with Lohan was released on Netflix.
Anyone who grew up watching 2000s movies will naturally recall the numerous rom-coms and dramedies featuring Lindsay Lohan. Just think of 2003's iconic Freaky Friday or 1998's The Parent Trap, which made little LiLo a star — and became her curse in later years. Despite her previous accomplishments, Lohan has long been absent from the acting scene, occasionally hitting the headlines for high-profile scandals in which she has been involved. But as we know, Lindsay's career has been revitalized in recent years, to the point of being called the 'Lohan-aissance': the actress made her bug comeback in the 2019 horror film Among the Shadows, and has followed it up with roles in romantic comedies that are now being released under the Netflix umbrella.
Although one of her most recent roles was a cameo in the new Mean Girls, which definitely became one of the top fan service moments of the first half of 2024, these days Lohan mostly stars in movies with a smaller budget, story and production scale, and it's rare for them to get impressive ratings from critics and audiences.
Unfortunately, very few people were thrilled with Irish Wish, which was released a few days ago, as well. However, that does not prevent the new movie from being a kind of guilty pleasure, as it is so bad that it is even good in some ways.
A New Romantic Comedy Starring Lindsay Lohan
Irish Wish, which was released just a few days ago, on March 15, 2024, is not Lohan's first collaboration with Netflix, as the streaming service released Falling for Christmas with her in 2022.
In a new romantic story with a touch of fantasy, Lindsay Lohan played Maddie Kelly, an editor for popular writer Paul Kennedy (Alexander Vlahos), with whom she has been secretly in love for many years. However, Paul himself was head over heels in love with Maddie's best friend, and much to her chagrin, Paul arranges a wedding at his Irish country house.
In this time of sorrow, Maddie makes a wish to be in her friend's place, and the higher fairy powers listen to her: to the protagonist's utter panic, she wakes up the next day as Paul's wife. Only Maddie has not noticed the proximity of her true soul mate, photographer James Thomas (Ed Speleers), whom she keeps running into in Ireland.
Is It Worth Watching?
If you're looking for a straight answer, we're afraid we can't give you one. If you are a fan of cheesy romantic comedies, then Irish Wish will undoubtedly be your cup of tea. Otherwise, the movie might be worth skipping, as the critics and audience scores speak for themselves: on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics score is a measly 34%, while the audience score is only slightly higher at 44%.
However, campiness and low scores are not always a bad thing, and as we said before, if these aspects excite you, you might like the movie. The best feeling about it was described by Kevin Maher of The Times:
'The Mean Girls star's latest project set in posh Ireland is genuinely terrible, but also oddly watchable.'
At the same time, Maher noted that Lindsay Lohan is the reason this movie still works despite the garbage script and production quality.
'Lohan, impervious to dreck, is innately sympathetic,' he concluded.
Perhaps the best indicator is its ratings, as it became one of Netflix's most-watched movies just days after its debut. Here are the Top 10 movies in the US as of March 19, 2024:
