Sweet Magnolias Failed Miserably With Most Of Its Male Characters
Why do they have to be so toxic?
Sweet Magnolias is a Netflix show that focuses on a small town community and offers us a closer look at several extraordinary families trying to make their lives bearable by any means necessary.
There are three main characters in the show: Helen, Maddie, and Dana Sue, but there are many other important members of the community that we need to pay attention to. However, it's not their well-being that we'll be discussing today, but rather their toxicity.
Sweet Magnolias is largely a female-centric show, and that's quite obvious, at least by the fact that it has an all-female main cast. And while there has always been a need for shows with such a premise, this particular series feels a little unbalanced.
Fans of Sweet Magnolias have noticed that the portrayal of men in the show is simply horrible. With a few exceptions, almost all of them are very poorly written and have destructive personalities. They have bad habits, anger issues, and are generally bad people.
“They have basically no rights, they get no respect whatsoever and they seem to just be little pawns,” Redditor Far_Home2616 said.
Take, for example, Brad Wellington, one of the first terrible male characters on the show. He worked for Dana Sue and stole alcohol from the restaurant. When she found out and fired him, he made a lot of misogynistic comments to her and even threatened to sue her. But frankly, we think Brad's character is a bit too stereotypical.
Another great example is Bill Townsend. He cheated on Maddie, left her alone with her children, and never fully took responsibility for his actions. There were small hints that he might have regretted his actions, but he never admitted that what he did was wrong and refused to face the consequences of his behavior.
Sweet Magnolias ended season 3 this summer, so let's just hope the writers bring more good guys into the show if there ever is a season 4.
