SVU’s Mariska Hargitay Finally Comments on Bensler: ‘It’s Time’
Is that a happily ever after we’ve been waiting for?
Although Law & Order: Special Victims Unit remains the longest-running and most popular spin-off of the franchise, fans of the show have a bone to pick with the creators. From the sheer obscurity of some of the show's recent cases to the flawless character of Olivia Benson, there is always room for growth.
There is also always room for change when it comes to the writers' approach to fandom headcanons. And if it once seemed that the behind-the-scenes crew was doing its best to avoid turning any fan theory into canon, today the most anticipated romance in the entire Law & Order franchise is closer to happening than ever before.
Are Olivia Benson and Eliot Stabler an Endgame?
For decades, Special Victim Unit fans have dreamed of Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler becoming more than just loyal partners and friends. Since the show's inception, viewers have speculated about the nature of their relationship, but the show has never crossed the line so many people wished it would.
After the departure of Christopher Meloni, who portrayed Elliot Stabler on the show, all of Bensler's hopes and dreams became a distant memory. But with his comeback to the franchise as Law & Order: Organized Crime lead, viewers began to root twice as hard for the characters to come together.
According to Mariska Hargitay, who now stars in SVU, the reunion of Benson and Stabler that fans have been clamoring to see for 25 years is closer than ever. In a recent interview with Variety, the actress reassured fans that Bensler is only a hiatus away:
“I met his showrunner [John Shiban]. They want us together, and Chris and I were talking about it, and it’s time. It’s time now for us. This was a long time not being in each other’s universe. That’s why we did the calls and stuff like that. But we’re excited to get back in there, get back in the ring,” Hargitay teased.
Though the actress didn't explicitly say that Benson and Stabler's relationship will become romantic, chances are that's where the crossover will lead. Given all the clues from the last crossover in SVU season 24, the two must now be ready to take their friendship to the next level.
