Surprise Moana Sequel Plans To Beat Wicked In Cinemas This Thanksgiving
Do we have a new Barbienheimer in the making?
Summary:
- Moana 2, previously announced as an animated series, will premiere in theaters on November 27, 2024.
- The movie will share the premiere date with a live-action adaptation of the iconic musical Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
- Both movies will attract similar audiences, so viewers are expecting a musical version of the Barbienheimer clash to happen.
Given how good the films of 2023 were, and how close the race was for all the nominations and awards in the 2023/2024 awards season, the bar is also very high for next year's films. With wonderful stories, impressive productions, and brilliant performances, audiences won't settle for anything less than amazing.
But it's not just drama and romantic comedy fans who are in for a treat this year. Mean Girls has made the year a success for musical fans as well, setting an example of a classic story getting a fresh start in an entirely new format. Though reviews of the reboot were mixed, those who enjoy the genre in general had the best time singing along.
However, the biggest and most anticipated premiere of the year is yet to come. Wicked: Part 1, the live-action adaptation of the iconic musical that every theater lover knows, will hit theaters on November 27, 2024.
What wasn't expected, however, is that Disney will try to undermine its success by releasing another major premiere on the same day.
Moana 2 Movie Premiere Date
One of Disney's biggest animated hits of the past decade, Moana, which was released in 2016, is finally coming back with a promised sequel.
However, fans who were expecting to see Moana continue into an animated series, as was previously planned, may be disappointed. The series has been canceled and instead the second movie is in the works.
Not only is it a done deal, but it is almost ready for release. According to Disney's CEO Bob Iger, the second part of a heartfelt story will premiere on the big screen on November 27, 2024, just like Wicked: Part 1.
By setting this as the release date, both movies are expected to get the bank during the Thanksgiving Day as well as the first weekend.
Considering the fact that both movies will primarily attract family audiences as well as musical lovers, it's safe to assume that the release will have a similar effect as Christopher Nolan 's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie had in July 2023.
The only difference is that the crowd would likely be dressed in pink, green, and flower necklaces.
While it's hard to guess which movie will win the box office battle and attract more viewers, it would be interesting to keep an eye on the stats as Thanksgiving approaches.
Will Ariana Grande's name attached to Wicked be enough to win over the parents of every little girl who dreams of being Moana in real life? We'll just have to wait and see.
Stay tuned for more news and behind-the-scenes updates on Wicked: Part 1 or Moana 2.
