Superwholock Is Doomed: Time to Make Peace with It
If you were an active Tumblr user back in the day (in the 2010s), you couldn't have missed the Superwholock fandom. I bet you were part of it, even if you didn't know it yourself!
What is Superwholock? It's… complicated. Essentially, it is a fandom dedicated to three popular shows – Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock. How on Earth are they related? That is a fair question.
Urban Dictionary defines Superwholocked people as "having an incurable obsession with the three TV shows Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Supernatural." Accurate.
Superwholock has taken Tumblr and other social platforms by storm since 2011 and has never let go of any of us involved. Not that we ourselves wanted to...
However, in 2023, it seems to some that it might be time for the Superwholock fandom to give way to other blossoming fandoms of our time. Why, you ask?
Sherlock hasn't had a new episode since 2017, although creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss don't want the fans to give up their Season 5 dream. It is not impossible but do we really want it at this point?
The world has also seen Supernatural come to an end. The show aired its finale in 2020.
In 2022, the fandom set high hopes for the show's spin-off The Winchesters but so far it seems that the prequel (sequel?) hasn't received the same love as its predecessor. One wonders why…
Doctor Who is the only one left of the once glorious trio that is still going strong, although a lot has changed since it ruled Tumblr, even the fanbase itself.
Several new Doctors and different directions that the show has taken will do that to people…
Many fans have also outgrown their Superwholock personas but the most hardcore ones are still there, lurking in the dark at the back of Tumblr, Reddit, Twitter, and other places where regular people do not expect them, biding their time for the new Superwholock era that they are sure is coming anytime soon…
For now, we personally are not ready to say goodbye to the beautiful phenomenon that is Superwhock and all the great things it has brought us.
The Superwholocked are still here and are still sweating at the mere thought of someone suggesting that some amalgamation of new shows is "the new Superwholock." It would be pretty hard to recreate something so chaotic!
