Succession Casting Directors Almost Made a Fatal Mistake With Kieran Culkin
Thankfully, the casting directors got it all right in the end.
Auditioning for one role only to be cast in another is not uncommon in film and television production.
We all know a bunch of amazing stories about how the characters we know, love, and can't imagine being any other way were supposed to be played by someone else.
This story of one of the most charismatic members of Roy's family originally reading for a different role should definitely be on the list.
Recently, Kieran Culkin visited Esquire as part of a promotion for season 4 of Succession, which will also be the final season of the show.
There, among other questions about the show and his career, he was asked how much he knew about Roman when he sealed the deal for the role.
It turns out that the actor wasn't supposed to be Roman at all! He was sent the script to try out Cousin Greg's role instead but knew right away that he just wasn't right for it.
"I knew immediately I was not right for it and I wasn't gonna read for it. Read on and saw Roman walk in the room," Culkin said, remembering his first thoughts about the character and his reasoning.
"And then I made one choice at the start of the pilot, which was just like 'Okay, this guy feels like he never has to suffer any consequences'".
It's hard to imagine both Roman and Greg being played by someone else on the show, let alone switching actors like that.
However, it's always nice to learn such details and imagine how fun it would be to see how Succession's dynamic would have worked without all the changes that came later in production.
If you are interested in seeing what the finale of Succession would bring and who would be the one to get everything after Logan Roy, tune in to HBO on Sundays at 9 pm.
Catch up on the premiere episode, which aired on March 26 on HBO Max.
