The mix of horror and nostalgia of 'Stranger Things' is just what the doctor ordered. Netflix has debuted the trailer for the fourth season of the breakout sci-fi show, and there are lots of hidden references, Easter eggs and hints on what's coming.

Every end has a beginning, Duffer brothers said when teasing the upcoming season 4. Some fans are already questioning how they're going to tame their excitement for one more month to finally witness said beginning.

The new season 4 trailer has already prompted a wave of fan theories, and extensive research of every frame continues. If you don't have any emotional capability to craft your own theories, we have picked the most interesting and chilling ideas scattered around social media.

And yes – beware of spoilers in case you are yet to see the previous seasons of 'Stranger Things '.

Alternate universe?

Okay, so the year is 2022, it would be weird if no one thought of a multiverse possibility, or any other alternate world option that 'Stranger Things' could explore.

"Stranger Things 4 alternate universe theory," Reddit user suggested. "Okay so I just noticed this but I think we will be seeing different stranger things universes. 'why do I think that?" Look at this. Same grave different name. Yes this could very well just be a mistake but I don't really think it is because we are already pretty sure we are getting time travel, even in the trailer we see stuff happening in the past."

If you look closely at the tombstone of Billy Hargrove, you may indeed notice that at some point it says "William" instead of "Billy". Uh-oh…

Who is the villain?

In the end of the trailer, we can see a truly terrifying eye-less creature that appears to be one of the season's monsters. It has never appeared before, and fans have already said that it looks like a 'Game of Thrones ' villain – which, if you remember Duffer brothers boasting "our Game of Thrones season", is quite understandable.

Oh hi, is that the night king?

Many people guessed that the main villain could be Vecna – a once-human lich from 'Dungeons & Dragons', the game beloved by the series' characters. There was also a version suggesting that it was Billy who turned into the sinister lich.

Others have even more chilling versions. Remember Barb?..

Glad to know the fans of the show are still capable of jokes after witnessing that horror.

Max, are you okay?..

One of the scenes in the trailer looks like it's teasing something potentially heartbreaking, with fans suggesting that it is Max who faces the biggest threat this season.

"Regarding Max, I'm wondering if that creature/thing is pretending to be Billy and sending false messages or something to get them to the upside down to release him. She also seems to be running away from it and towards the silhouettes of the group before it appears in the house," one of the fans said.

Some are already fearing that Max will end up dead, as there is a brief moment in the trailer where all the kids gather around someone in what looks like mourning. Given that Max is seen levitating and it's unclear whether she has supernatural abilities or is cursed… Some people are just praying that she will be ok.

The first part of season 4 is arriving on Netflix on May 27, with the second half following later in July.
