Stephen King Says the 1999 Horror He Never Finished Is the ‘Worst Nightmare You Ever Had’
Additionally, the high ratings speak volumes.
Summary:
- Stephen King has created a lot of horror stories throughout his career, but only one movie from 1999 was able to scare him away.
- Initially launched as an independent project, the film follows three young filmmakers who disappear in Maryland’s woods after they embark on a search for a mythical creature for their documentary.
- According to King, he wasn’t able to finish the movie when he made an attempt to watch it for the first time.
Stephen King may not be scared of what everyone finds creepy in his book adaptations, but there’s only one movie that the proclaimed author still freaks out about.
Being a big fan of the horror genre himself, King opened up about his top 10 modern horror films back in the day, and one of them is indeed something that causes numerous heated discussions among many viewers.
Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the 1999 supernatural movie The Blair Witch Project kicked it off as an independent low-budget project that later on transformed into a huge hit.
The film initially follows three student filmmakers who are set to hike in the woods in Maryland in an attempt to film a documentary about a local creepy legend, “The Blair Witch”. The movie then adapts a “found footage” format as the characters mysteriously disappear in the woods and only their camera can help discover what really happened.
Talking about The Blair Witch Project in his essay, Stephen King revealed that he had made an attempt to watch the movie for the first time while staying in the hospital after being hit by a car, but “was just freaked out of my mind” and eventually couldn’t finish the film as he was “too scared to go on”.
Although, as a true fan of the genre, some time later King still made it to see how The Blair Witch Project ends, the author didn’t change his primary opinion calling the movie “worst nightmare you ever had”.
The Blair Witch Project is in fact a film that got critics and viewers divided, despite the overall warm welcome back in 1999. Upon its release, the movie received numerous accolades from the professionals landing an impressive score of 86% while also garnering almost $250 million in the box office against the initial budget of only $750.000.
Though The Blair Witch Project still earned the viewers’ love, some questioned whether it was indeed that scary while others criticized the movie’s “found footage” format that made them dizzy due to shaky camera movements.
With all the ambiguous reviews that don’t seem too contradictory these days, The Blair Witch Project can still be proud of adding Stephen King’s unquestionable compliment to its list of merits.
