Snowpiercer’s Canceled Final Season Suddenly Gets a Hopeful Update
The fourth season of the show, which was scrapped despite being practically finished, may still see the light of day.
Summary:
- Compared to the movie, the Snowpiercer series made the story and characters much more nuanced
- Unfortunately, Warner Bros. gave the show's fourth and final season the Batgirl treatment, canceling it even though it was finished
- According to one of the cast members, the show is currently looking for a new way to give fans the much-anticipated finale
The French graphic novel series Snowpiercer introduced a truly fresh take on the post-apocalypse genre, which is usually dominated by stories set after nuclear wars or deadly infections.
Snowpiercer took a completely different approach, showing us a world covered in ice and snow after the Second Ice Age, with the remnants of humanity living on a constantly moving train.
However, the scarcity of precious resources has led to a massive segregation in society, with those living in the front cars of the train bathing in luxury, while the unlucky ones at the back barely survive from day to day.
Naturally, such a state of affairs is a disaster waiting to happen, with the oppressed masses inevitably rebelling against the obnoxious inhabitants of the front cars, so the conflict became the crux of the story.
Original Snowpiercer Graphic Novel Has Been Adapted Twice
With such a unique and intriguing setup, it's no wonder that the graphic novel has been adapted not once but twice, the first time in 2013.
The film of the same name, starring Chris Evans, received an exceptionally positive reception, with both critics and fans praising its well-acted characters, gripping story, and brutal action.
However, the runtime limitations of the movie didn't allow for much character development and exploration of the world of Snowpiercer, so when it was announced that a TV adaptation was in the works, fans were eagerly anticipating it.
Although the critical reception of the show's first season, which premiered in 2020, was somewhat mixed, fans were much warmer to it, appreciating that the TV format allowed for a more nuanced story and characters compared to the fairly straightforward and action-packed film adaptation.
Season 2 turned out to be even better than its predecessor, and even though season 3 felt a bit like a downgrade, many fans were still waiting to see the end of the story.
Canceled Snowpiercer Season 4 Is Looking For A New Home
To their shock, in January 2023, it was announced that the fourth and final season of the Snowpiercer TV series would be canceled, despite the fact that it was practically complete.
While the reasons for such a drastic action are rather vague, according to some sources the decision to scrap the already filmed season was made for tax reasons, as it was apparently better in a financial sense than to release it.
Considering that Warner Bros. did the exact same thing with the Batgirl movie, which was also shot but never released, this turn of events, while certainly unexpected, doesn't seem all that bizarre.
But a new update on the show suggests that the fourth season of the show may still have a chance to see the light of day.
In an interview with TVLine, Mike O'Malley, who played Sam Roche on the show, revealed that Tomorrow Studios is currently looking for a partner to bring fans the long-awaited final season.
He also mentioned that season 4 provides a "hopeful" conclusion to the story, further exploring the themes of climate change and society, so it definitely deserves to be released at some point.
For now, no further information about the show's fate has been revealed, so fans can only hope for the best and wait for more positive updates.
